The Nationals called up Cade Cavalli to pitch tonight. Cavalli was a former first-round pick who has struggled and hasn't pitched in MLB in a while. He missed the entire 2023 season after Tommy John surgery and he has spent the entire 2025 season pitching in Triple-A.
He started the season very well, but as of late he has struggled. In 5 of his last 6 Triple-A starts, Cavalli has allowed 4 or more earned runs. His ERA for the season has ballooned to 6.09. That's not a good thing against an A's lineup that is really hitting the ball well.
Opposite Cavalli will be the A's Jeffrey Springs. He has quietly become the Athletics best option in their pitching rotation. He's 10-7 overall with an ERA of 4.00. The A's have won 5 of his last 6 starts. In July, Springs went 4-1 with a 3.71 ERA.
The Athletics have won 8 of their last 11 games and 5 straight on the road. That includes last night's 16-7 shellacking of the Nationals.
