LIONS @ PANTHERS 10/4/26
The Week 4 nightcap is the highest total on the board, and the market has been moving hard toward Detroit and the over all week. The look-ahead was Lions -3 with a 47.5 total. It's now Detroit -3.5 to -4 with the number sitting at 50.5-51.5 depending on the book. That's a full field goal of total movement and a hook on the spread — the sharps and the public are aligned, and the injury report explains why.
The sharp money is telling: the sharp win probability model gives Detroit a 64.59% chance to win outright, and on the spread it's essentially a coin flip — 50.46% on Carolina +4, 49.54% on Detroit -4. On the total, the sharps lean 50.69% to the Over at 51.5. That's a market that likes Detroit to win but isn't confident in the cover.
💰 GAME-LEVEL BEST BETS
Detroit Lions Moneyline
The cleanest read on this game is that Detroit wins. The Lions have scored exactly 31 points in all three games — that's the third-most points per game in the NFL (31.0, 3rd) — and they're doing it with balance: 287.0 passing yards per game (6th) and 120.67 rushing yards per game (9th). Jared GoffJared Goff has been surgical, posting an 8:0 TD-to-INT ratio with a 70.64% completion rate (5th) and a 6.03% touchdown rate (4th). Detroit's offense ranks 8th in DVOA at +15.5%.
Carolina's defense is the soft spot. The Panthers are allowing 193.33 rushing yards per game (32nd) at 5.74 yards per carry (32nd), and they've surrendered six rushing touchdowns (32nd). They've also lost both starting cornerbacks — Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson — to injured reserve, plus Xavier Legette. That's a secondary that was already allowing 199.67 passing yards per game (5th) now missing its top two cover men.
The one caveat: Detroit's own defense is a disaster. The Lions are allowing 470.67 yards per game (32nd) and 31.67 points per game (32nd), with a 17.2% defensive DVOA (28th). That's why the moneyline is -185 and not -300. But the Panthers' offense, for all its volume, has been inefficient — Bryce Young ranks 28th in completion percentage (59.02%) and the team is 22nd in third-down conversion rate (36.84%). Detroit's pass rush (7 sacks, 4th; 27 pressures, 6th) should get home against a Carolina line missing Taylor Moton and Ikem Ekwonu.
Jahmyr Gibbs Rushing + Receiving Yards Over 135.5
This could be my favorite play on the board, and it's the one the news cycle is screaming about. Carolina has the worst run defense in football — 580 rushing yards allowed on 101 attempts, 193.3 per game, 5.7 per carry, six rushing touchdowns, and five runs of 20-plus yards including a 61-yarder. Gibbs is averaging more than 21 carries per game and is coming off a 99-yard effort on just 20 carries last week.
The form table backs it up: Gibbs has cleared 135.5 combined yards in 66.67% of his last 15 games and is averaging 154.33 combined yards per game this season. His projection sits at 138.12 — above the line. The rain expected in Charlotte actually helps here: a wet field and a run-heavy game script means Detroit leans on Gibbs to control the clock, especially if they're protecting a lead. With the offensive line fully healthy and Carolina's front seven decimated, Gibbs is the engine of this offense tonight.
Jared Goff Passing Touchdowns Over 1.5
Goff has thrown for multiple touchdowns in all three games this season — a 100% hit rate — and he's averaging 2.67 passing TDs per game. The projection is 1.91, comfortably over the 1.5 line. Carolina's defense has allowed 10 total touchdowns (24th) and, while their passing touchdown allowed number looks respectable (4, 11th), that's a function of teams running on them instead. With both starting corners on IR, Goff should have clean looks to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams all night.
The one risk is game script — if Detroit jumps out early and leans on Gibbs, Goff's volume could dip. But he's thrown 36.33 pass attempts per game (8th) and the Lions run the 10th-quickest pace of play, so the opportunities should be there. At -175, you're paying a premium, but the 100% hit rate and the matchup justify it.
Darren Waller Receptions Over 3.5
Waller has hit this number in each of his past two games — 51 and 33 receiving yards — and the only game he missed was the season opener when he saw just two targets. Last week against Cleveland he set a season-high with five receptions on eight targets, and that increased role came after Jalen Coker exited early with an injury.
Detroit has allowed 117 receiving yards per game to tight ends over the past three weeks, and five different tight ends have cleared this number against them. The Lions' defense is 32nd in receptions allowed (28.67 per game) and 31st in passing touchdowns allowed (3.0 per game). Waller is the safety valve for Bryce Young, who's throwing 40.67 times per game (3rd). At +135, you're getting plus-money on a tight end who's trending up in a matchup that's been a sieve against the position.
Chuba Hubbard Rushing Yards Over 66.5
Hubbard is the beneficiary of Carolina's commitment to the run, and Detroit's run defense is vulnerable — 117.33 rushing yards allowed per game (22nd) at 4.4 yards per carry (20th). Hubbard went for 82 of Carolina's 98 rushing yards last week against Cleveland and is averaging 61.33 rushing yards per game this season. His projection is 69.04, above the 66.5 line.
The concern is volume — Hubbard has only cleared this number in 33.33% of his last 15 games and is averaging just 13.67 carries per game. But the game script should favor him: Carolina is a home underdog in a game with a 50.5 total, and if they're playing from behind, they'll need to keep the ball on the ground to control clock. The matchup against a Detroit front that's allowing 4.4 yards per carry is the tiebreaker.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Receptions Over 7.5
St. Brown has been Goff's security blanket, and with Carolina missing both starting corners, this is a spot where he could eat. He's averaging 7.67 receptions per game this season and has cleared 7.5 in 80% of his last five games and 60% of his last 10. His projection is 7.76 — right at the line.
The plus-money price is the appeal here. Carolina's defense is 5th in receptions allowed (18.67 per game), which is a real concern, but that number is skewed by teams running on them. With the Panthers' cornerback room gutted, St. Brown should see a healthy target share. At +122, you're getting a fair price on a player who's been Goff's most reliable target.
⚠️ INJURY REPORT — THE X-FACTOR
Carolina is decimated. Both starting cornerbacks — Jaycee Horn (quads) and Mike Jackson (groin) — are on injured reserve, along with Xavier Legette (knee), Jonathon Brooks, Trevor Etienne, Brady Christensen, Bam Martin-Scott, Chris Brazzell II, and Nic Scourton. Taylor Moton (out), Ikem Ekwonu (out), Tershawn Wharton (out), and Damien Lewis (out) are all missing from the offensive line. Jalen Coker (quads), Lee Hunter (foot), and Cam Jackson are questionable.
Detroit isn't unscathed either — Kerby Joseph (out), Brian Branch (out), Giovanni Manu (out), Ben Bartch (out), and D.J. Reed (questionable) are all banged up in the secondary. That's part of why the total has climbed to 50.5.
The bottom line: Carolina's injuries at cornerback and along the offensive line are the biggest swing factors in this game. Detroit's pass rush should feast, and Goff should have time to operate.
🎯 THE VERDICT
Expect points in this game as both offenses have plenty of firepower. Detroit ranks 3rd in scoring (31 ppg) and Carolina is tied for 5th (29.7). On the other end, both defenses have serious issues. Carolina’s run defense is the worst in the NFL allowing 193.3 yards per game.
Detroit’s secondary has been decimated by injury and the Lions rank dead last in passing yards allowed per game (299.3). As a result, the Lions are allowing a league-worst 31.7 points per game. There is rain in the forecast today in Charlotte, but it appears as though the rain will let up at game time. Regardless, expect both teams to be able to score tonight.
