DETROIT @ BUFFALO (BUF -5.5, 54.5)

LIONS @ BILLS 9/17/26

The marquee game of Week 2 is a genuine heavyweight bout: two 1-0 teams, two MVP-caliber quarterbacks, and a total that's been bet up all week. Buffalo opens its brand-new $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium tonight, and the market has spent the week telling us exactly who it believes in.

WHO WINS: BUFFALO BILLS

This is a spot where the number, the venue, and the matchup all point the same direction. Buffalo is a 5.5-point home favorite with the total sitting at 54.5 — one of the highest totals we'll see all season — and the sharp money is squarely on the home side.

The sharp picks table gives Buffalo a 68.22% win probability versus Detroit's 31.78%, and that gap is the story of this game. The line has moved hard toward Buffalo all week: the moneyline opened around -165 and has been bet up to -225, while Detroit drifted from +140 out to +193. That's not random noise — that's respected money loading up on the Bills at home in their stadium opener.

The case for Buffalo starts under center. Josh Allen was the catalyst in Week 1, totaling 357 yards (334 passing, 23 rushing) and four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) in a 36-31 win over Houston — his 25th career game with at least four combined passing and rushing touchdowns, the sixth QB in NFL history to reach that mark. He's the current MVP betting favorite, and he gets to christen a new building against a Detroit defense that just got shredded.

ThE Detroit defense is the real problem. In Week 1, the Lions let Tyler Shough — a second-year quarterback — carve them up for 410 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 35-of-56 passing in a 31-30 overtime escape against the Saints. Detroit blew a 21-0 third-quarter lead in that game. If Shough can hang 410 on this secondary, Allen at home is a nightmare matchup. Head coach Dan Campbell knows it, calling Allen "the catalyst for them" and saying he "can't say enough about this quarterback."

The Lions' injury report makes it worse. Detroit is without Kerby Joseph (Out) and Brian Branch (Out) — two of their best defensive backs — plus D.J. Reed is Questionable. That's a depleted secondary facing the most dangerous dual-threat quarterback in football. On the other side, Buffalo's defensive concerns are real but less severe: Cole Bishop (Questionable) and T.J. Sanders (Questionable) are the names to watch.

Detroit's counter is Jahmyr Gibbs, who headlines the AP Offensive Player of the Year race and is the engine of this offense. He'll keep it competitive — this should be a high-scoring, back-and-forth game. But the venue, the quarterback edge, and the sharp money all say Buffalo.

BEST PLAYER PROPS

Josh Allen Over 249.5 Passing Yards

This is my favorite play on the board, and the form data backs it hard. Allen has cleared this number in 80% of his last five games (averaging 256.4 passing yards), 70% of his last 10 (241.9), and 66.67% of his last 15 (239.6). The projection model has him at 244.0 passing yards — right at the line — but that undersells the matchup. Detroit just surrendered 410 passing yards to Tyler Shough, and now they're missing Joseph and Branch in the secondary. Allen threw for 334 yards in Week 1 against a Texans defense that's better than this Detroit unit.

The one caveat: Allen's rushing production can eat into his passing volume, and the projection sits just under the line. But the combination of a leaky Detroit secondary, a home crowd in a brand-new stadium, and Allen's 80% recent hit rate makes this the cleanest play on the board.

Jameson Williams Over 3.5 Receptions

Williams is quietly the most reliable volume play in this Detroit passing game, and the numbers are striking. He's hit Over 3.5 receptions in 80% of his last five games (4.8 catches per game) and 80% of his last 10 (also 4.8). Over the last 15 he's at 66.67% (4.07), and over the last 20 he's at 65% (4.0). The projection model has him at 4.23 receptions — comfortably over the line.

Here's the kicker: Williams has hit this number in 100% of his games as a visitor (4.0 catches per game in that split). Tonight he's on the road in Buffalo. With the Lions likely playing from behind and throwing to keep pace with Allen, Williams' target volume should hold. The Bills' secondary was torched in Week 1 — C.J. Stroud threw for 274 yards and Nico Collins erupted for 75 yards on seven receptions — and Detroit will need to throw to stay in this one.

Dawson Knox Over 12.5 Receiving Yards

This is a sneaky-strong play that the form data loves. Knox has cleared 12.5 receiving yards in 80% of his last five games (24.6 yards per game), 80% of his last 10 (30.8), 86.67% of his last 15 (28.8), and 80% of his last 20 (24.5). The projection model has him at 16.59 receiving yards — well over the line. That's a massive cushion between the projection and the number.

The matchup context matters too: with Buffalo expected to move the ball consistently against a banged-up Detroit secondary, Knox should see his usual handful of targets in the intermediate passing game. The 12.5 line is remarkably low for a tight end who's averaging nearly 25 yards per game over his last 20.

Sam LaPorta Over 44.5 Receiving Yards

LaPorta is a strong bounce-back candidate in a game where Detroit will need to throw. He's hit Over 44.5 receiving yards in 80% of his last five games (53.6 yards per game), 60% of his last 10 (53.7), 66.67% of his last 15 (58.13), and 60% of his last 20 (51.95). The projection model has him at 46.6 receiving yards (44.5 is still available around -120). And he's hit this number in 100% of his games as a visitor (48.0 yards per game in that split).

The Bills allowed tight ends to find space in Week 1, and with Detroit likely playing from behind, LaPorta should see his usual target share in the intermediate passing game. The 46.5 line is a fair number, but the recent form and the road split give him a slight edge.

GAME TOTAL

The total has been bet up from 52.5 to 54.5 — a two-point move that tells you the market expects points. The sharp total table is a dead-even 50/50 at 55.0, so there's no edge on the total itself. The spread sharp table is nearly even too (50.23% Buffalo / 49.77% Detroit), which means the value is in the moneyline and the props, not the number. This is also the highest total ever for an NFL mid-week game.

INJURY WATCH

Detroit Lions: Kerby Joseph (Out), Brian Branch (Out), Giovanni Manu (Out), Christian Mahogany (Out), Blake Miller (Out), D.J. Reed (Questionable), plus several players on Injured Reserve including Cade Mays, Payton Turner, Isiah Pacheco, Damone Clark, and Kendrick Law.

Buffalo Bills: Tyrell Shavers (Out), Dorian Strong (Out), Zane Durant (Injured Reserve), Ty Johnson (Questionable), T.J. Sanders (Questionable), Cole Bishop (Questionable).

The Joseph and Branch absences are the biggest story — Detroit's secondary is compromised against the best quarterback in football.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Buffalo wins this game. The sharp money (68.22% win probability), the venue (new stadium opener), the quarterback edge (Allen vs. a depleted Detroit secondary), and the line movement (Buffalo bet from -165 to -225) all align. Detroit's offense will keep it interesting — Gibbs and the passing game are legit — but the Bills have too many advantages.
