The 49ers blew a lead last week and lost to the Rams. Now, they are 1-2 playing a 1-2 Patriots team that just got blown out by the Jets 24-3 last Thursday night. This will be the biggest spread of the week.
So far this season, the biggest underdog each week has actually won outright. I'm not sure the Patriots can win this one, but keep in mind that underdogs of 6 points or more this season are currently 13-1 ATS. And, teams that lose by 20 points or more come back and cover 58 percent of the time the following week.
WASHINGTON @ ARIZONA (ARI -3.5, 49.5)
CARDINALS -3.5
Yes, Jayden Daniels is good, but the hype is getting out of hand. This week, he'll face a Cardinals defense that is a little bit better than most people realize. Arizona was able to hang around with elite teams like Buffalo and Detroit this season. I think the Cardinals can come up with more stops that the worst defense in the NFL.
Washington gave up 33 points last week. That was the fourth time in their last six games that the Commanders allowed 30 or more points. This is a tough spot for Washington. They have to travel west. Plus, they are playing on short rest after playing last Monday night. Teams playing on short rest as an underdog have only won 43 percent of the time since 2005. The Commanders are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games.
KANSAS CITY @ LA CHARGERS (KC -7, 41.5)
CHIEFS (2H) -3.5
The Chiefs are off to a strong start this season. They will play a familiar opponent today, though that opponent may look a little different than in year's past. That's because the Jim Harbaugh era has started.
Chargers QB Justin Herbert has an ankle sprain, so you can bet that Harbaugh and Chargers will rely on the run even more. Los Angeles ranks No. 2 in rushing offense so far in 2024. I think that will allow the Bolts to hang around early on in this game, but here's what I like.
In his last 13 starts, Patrick Mahomes is just 3-10 against the first half spread. In those 13 games, Mahomes and the Chiefs are 11-2 against the second half spread. That includes 8 second half covers in a row. That's due, in large part, to a Chiefs defense that has been outstanding in the second half for most of the last two seasons.
