RAIDERS @ SEAHAWKS 8/7/25
The Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders meet tonight in Week 1 NFL preseason action at Lumen Field in Seattle. It’s one of three games scheduled tonight.
The Las Vegas Raiders have won a total of 18 games over the last three seasons and have advanced to the playoffs twice since the 2003 campaign. Pete Carroll, now 73, takes over as the team’s new head coach.
Geno Smith will be the quarterback for Chip Kelly, who is the offensive coordinator. While wide receiver Jakobi Meyers displayed flashes despite subpar quarterback play, tight end Brock Bowers rose to fame quickly. Ashton Jeanty, a rookie running back, is added to relieve pressure on the passing game and balance things out. The Raiders could make some noise offensively with Kelly’s creativity and some solid weapons.
There are many new players on defense, including whoever replaces DT Christian Wilkins, who was just released. Even though superstar Maxx Crosby is still around, success on this side of the ball will require much more. The Raiders were among the league's worst pass rush teams last season. Although there is a chance that the offense will surprise some people, it is unlikely that the Raiders will break their playoff drought given their defensive roster deficiencies.
The Seattle Seahawks, who are in their second season under coach Mike Macdonald, have missed the playoffs three of the previous four seasons. Since the 2002 season, the Seahawks have not missed the postseason in three consecutive years.
The Seahawks' offense will be very different without Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Geno Smith. Cooper Kupp joins from the Rams, while Sam Darnold is in at quarterback. Running backs Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet will lead the running game, and WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba is coming off a Pro Bowl season. There was a lot of roster turnover, so it will be interesting to see how quickly everything comes together.
The Seahawks made a big defensive splash when they signed defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. The addition of a four-time Pro Bowl player and someone with 61.5 career sacks elevates this defense. It’s a defense that was already ranked in the top ten with guys like Leonard Williams and Devon Witherspoon. The Seahawks may be introducing Legion of Boom Part 2 given how strong this unit was a year ago, the returning production, and the significant additions.
As was the case in last year’s preseason, both teams will be focused on quarterback depth. Aidan O’Connell has been a turnover-prone train wreck for the Raiders. Cam Miller has not performed well against elite competition.
The Seahawks have the better QB room with veteran Drew Lock and rookie Jalen Milroe who should be fun to watch when he enters tonight’s game.

Despite what should be a fun offense to watch, don’t expect the Raiders to generate much offense with guys like Aidan O’Connell and Cam Miller under center. Starter Geno Smith is unlikely to play and even if he does, it will only be for a series or two. Seattle will turn the offense over to Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe, who will lead the Seahawks backups. Head coach Mike MacDonald will not play his starters tonight. That should lead to a low-scoring affair, as most preseason games are.
