Los Angeles Rams vs New Orleans Saints
In the Sunday afternoon slot, the New Orleans Saints travel west to Los Angeles, desperate to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. After a seven-game losing streak which saw head coach Dennis Allen lose his job, it looked like this Saints’ season was already over, with the team sitting bottom of the NFC South at 2-7.
However, two straight victories over the Falcons and Browns have left the team just two wins behind Atlanta in the race for the division. Last week’s performance against Cleveland was the Saints’ best of the year on offense, putting up 473 total yards (including 214 on the ground) en route to a 35-14 win.
They’ll be looking for the offense to continue this impressive form on Sunday, against a Rams team that has struggled on the defensive side. Sean McVay’s team ranks 26th in the league in scoring defense, giving up 25.1 points a game. The Rams have struggled against the run in particular, having given up 100+ yards in nine of their 11 games so far this year. Their poor form was highlighted last week in Philadelphia, where Saquon Barkley put up his career-high of 255 yards rushing on the way to a 37-20 win.
LA have suffered several major injuries this season, but they still sit at 5-6, just a game back from the division lead in a chaotic NFC West. The Rams have turned a difficult season around lately, having won four of their last six, with the best of those wins being a 30-20 Thursday Night victory over Minnesota.
This Rams offense has been hit-and-miss this season, but with both Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp healthy again, they do boast one of the league’s very best receiver duos. Despite only making six starts each, the two men have a combined 1,038 receiving yards, and have been responsible for three 100-yard games each.
Both men are pivotal to the Rams' playoff chances, and they’ll both fancy their chances against a Saints defense that has really struggled through the air this year. The Saints have the league’s third-worst passing defense, giving up 256 yards a game. In this one, Alontae Taylor, Tyrann Mathieu and co. will need to be much improved to shut out Matthew Stafford’s passing attack.
On offense, the Saints' best shot at success runs through Alvin Kamara, who ranks third in the league in scrimmage yards with 1,225. Beyond him, the Rams will need to deal with Taysom Hill, who had a phenomenal 188-yard game against Cleveland before the bye. With Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed still sidelined, expect the Saints to try and establish the run early, as they look to improve to 5-7.
