Seattle Seahawks @ Detroit Lions

The Seattle Seahawks are one of just five remaining undefeated teams, off to a great start under rookie head coach Mike Macdonald. The offense looks great under new coordinator Ryan Grubb, who was responsible for Michael Penix, Rome Odunze and co. tearing up the college football world in 2023.

Grubb runs a spread offense with far more opportunities for the receivers, which has proven extremely effective across the board so far in 2024. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had his breakout game in Week 2, going for 12 catches and 117 yards against New England, while DK Metcalf has now posted back to back 100+ yard games, with a touchdown against both the Patriots and the Dolphins.

Despite Kenneth Walker III being out for the last two games, Zach Charbonnet has held it down, and gashed Miami’s defense for a new career high 91 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 3 drubbing.

While Seattle played a great game, they were never tested, and Miami didn’t look to be a threat from the very start. Detroit will present more of a rigorous test, but the Seahawks are playing good football, and going into this road game with a tonne of confidence.

Geno Smith and the offense rank third in completion percentage (74.7%), while also ranking third in passing yards per game (246.7), and 10th in yards per pass. Geno is thriving in the new system and his playmakers are making plays.

Defensively the Seahawks unit ranks number one in football in both yards per pass (3.9), and passing yards per game (132.3). Not surprising considering their head coach has been running the Baltimore Ravens defense for several seasons, bringing his experience over to the Pacific Northwest.

Detroit got themselves back on track with a win over the Cardinals in Week 3, largely thanks to a showing of pure dominance on the ground. David Montgomery ran the ball 23 times for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Jahmyr Gibbs had 16 carries for another 83. They outran the Cardinals by 110 yards, and in doing so controlled the possession with the football in their hands for nearly 37 minutes of the game.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Detroit lean into the run again this weekend, particularly against the league's best defense against the pass so far this year. Jared Goff has had some issues with turnovers so far this season, throwing four picks in the opening three games, but the Lions still rank 7th in passing yards per game, and certainly have the weapons to do some damage.

That being said, the news that standout tight end Sam LaPorta will be out for the season is a miserable one for Detroit, who will certainly miss his production over the middle the rest of the way.

The Lions themselves have been playing some great defense this year too, vastly improved from season past. They’re allowing just 25.8% on third down (3rd in the NFL), and defending the run extremely well, ranking 4th in yards per rush (3.6), and rushing yards per game (76.7). Not to mention the ever threatening presence of Aidan Hutchinson coming off the edge, who could flip a game on its head at any moment.
