TIGERS @ YANKEES 9/9/25
After years of struggling in the Bronx, the Tigers' 12–2 thumping of the Yankees last night was a statement victory. The Yankees must respond promptly. The key factor tonight is the pitching matchup: Carlos Rodón has been reliable for the majority of the season, while Detroit’s Jack Flaherty hasn't been very good.
New York is 80–64 going into Wednesday, while Detroit is 83–62. This series at Yankee Stadium will most likely have an impact on playoff positioning for both teams. Detroit has struggled in September (3–6 SU), even after that big win over New York last night. They lost two of three games to the Mets and did the same against the White Sox prior to this series.
The Tigers' offense has been inconsistent. In three of their last five games, they scored six runs or more, but in the other two, they were held to four runs or less. Injuries have been an issue. There is less depth because the Tigers are missing Manuel Margot and Matt Vierling in the outfield. With several arms on the injured list, the bullpen has been overworked, so Flaherty must go deep into this game. The issue? Lately, he has struggled to avoid crooked innings, particularly when pitching on the road.
The Yankees were playing good baseball prior to their ugly opening-game loss. They won two of three games against both Houston and Toronto before yesterday. Although the bats have been inconsistent, the long ball is always there. With 245 home runs this season, they lead the league in home runs.
Flaherty has been giving up a lot of home runs (22 allowed), and Aaron Judge and his teammates can make pitchers pay. The Yankees have managed to put things together despite having a thin bullpen and being without starting pitchers Clarke Schmidt and Gerrit Cole. They have dominated Detroit in the Bronx and they have been reliable at home (6–2 last eight at Yankee Stadium).
Flaherty has had a difficult season. After more than 146 innings, he has a 4.85 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Left-handed hitters are slugging .429 against him, and he has given up 10 home runs to righties. Yankee Stadium is hitter-friendly, and Flaherty’s road ERA is 5.64.
This year, Rodón has been a rock star in New York with strong splits against both sides of the plate, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 3.12 ERA. Righties barely crack .200 against him, while lefties only hit .165. His strikeout total of 180 indicates that he still has swing-and-miss ability, and he is holding hitters to an overall average of .231. Although he has had some control issues (69 walks), he has been able to limit damage at Yankee Stadium.
The Tigers are now 2-11 in their last 13 games against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. However, they are 5-1 overall in the last six meetings with New York. The Over cashed last night, making it 5 of the last 7 for Detroit and 13 of the last 20 for New York.

FREE PICK: JACK FLAHERTY OVER 3.5 HITS ALLOWED
You’ll have to hurry to get this one as the price continues to move on it. Flaherty has given up 20 hits in his last three starts, all losses by the way. He’s gone Over this prop in 8 of his last 10 starts and in 20 of 28 for the season. After New York’s terrible display last night - 2 runs on four hits - expect the bats to come alive tonight. Flaherty has four career starts against New York. He’s allowed 4 or more hits in three of the four.
