On Sunday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns. Minnesota is now in ninth place in the Western Conference after losing six of its last eight games. Phoenix is currently in 11th place, outside of the final play-in berth, after losing 10 of its last 13 games.
The Jazz defeated the Timberwolves 117-116 in Salt Lake City thanks to a late dunk from Walker Kessler.
Due to a one-game suspension for accruing 16 technical fouls this season, Minnesota All-Star Anthony Edwards missed the game.
Chris Finch, head coach of the Timberwolves, wasn't in the mood to speculate about whether the result would have been different had Edwards been wearing the uniform. The Timberwolves are not nearly as strong as the team that won 56 games last season. Even if Minnesota wins its last 21 regular-season games, it will not be able to match that output this season. Before Saturday, the Timberwolves were actually only 3.5 games ahead of the Suns.
Earlier in the season, Edwards averaged 28.5 points while the Timberwolves defeated the Suns twice.
Prior to scoring just 17 points against Oklahoma City on Monday and 18 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, Edwards had 18 consecutive games with 20 points or more.
Against a Phoenix squad that has given up 100 points or more in 17 consecutive games, Minnesota is hoping to see the best version of Edwards. Before Friday's 125-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at home, the Suns had actually given up 117 points or more in 12 straight games. Nick Richards contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Bol Bol scored 25 points, one less than his career high, to help the team win. In the victory, Bol made a career-high five three-pointers.
According to a recent report, Phoenix's locker room was toxic, and the team hasn't completely adapted to first-year coach Mike Budenholzer's methods. A national report surfaced shortly after that discussion subsided, claiming that Budenholzer asked star guard Devin Booker to soften his direct remarks.
It's interesting to note that Booker criticized the Suns after they were easily defeated by the Pelicans 124-116 on Thursday night, saying it was time to set a boundary and stop having the "get them next time" mentality.
Before Friday's game, Budenholzer stated that he was not bothered by Booker's most recent remarks.
Over the last seven games, Booker has averaged 8.7 assists. After averaging 31 points per game over the preceding four games, he scored just 17 points on Friday. Grayson Allen (left foot soreness) missed Friday's game, and Bradley Beal (left calf) has missed the Suns' last two games.
