Tennessee vs. Houston | Sunday, November 24, 2024
The Tennessee Titans will travel to Houston for an all-AFC South battle featuring two teams experiencing polar opposite seasons. CJ Stroud has lived up to the hype of being the #2 overall draft pick in 2023, leading the Texans to the playoffs in his rookie season, and continuing to have success in 2024 with a 7-4 record. Meanwhile, the Titans sit at 2-8 and enter this game on a two-game losing streak following defeats to the Vikings and Chargers. While the Texans have their sights set on the playoffs, the Titans’ focus has shifted to the draft, where they currently hold the #2 position, trailing only the Jaguars.
The Texans dominated the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, powered by Joe Mixon’s impressive performance of 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Signed to a two-year, $11.5 million deal in March, Mixon has proven to be worth every penny. He currently ranks third in the NFL for rushing touchdowns, trailing only Jalen Hurts and Derrick Henry. Mixon’s presence has significantly reduced the pressure on CJ Stroud and the passing game. By forcing opposing defenses to stack the box to defend against the run, Mixon creates more opportunities for Stroud to capitalize on openings in the secondary and dissect opposing defenses.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Texans have been outstanding, ranking third in the NFL with 21 takeaways. On Monday night, they forced two turnovers from Cooper Rush, including one returned for a touchdown, and added five sacks to their tally. Impressively, the Texans have maintained this level of success without star pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr, who has been sidelined with an injury since Week 9. Anderson still leads the team in sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (11) and is expected to return in the coming weeks, according to team reports. However, he won’t be available for this weekends game.
The Texans’ defense will look to continue their dominant form against Will Levis, who has struggled with ball security, turning the ball over 11 times in just seven games — the highest turnover rate in the NFL.
Will Levis and the Titans are navigating a grueling stretch in their schedule. After back-to-back losses to the Chargers and Vikings—both teams currently sitting in position for the #5 seeds in the AFC and NFC—they now face the first-place Texans. Levis boosted his stats in the last game with a 98-yard touchdown pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, the team’s lone touchdown in the game. Tony Pollard, a highly touted offseason acquisition signed to a $21.75 million deal over three years, only mustered up 15 yards in the entire game.
Tennessee are 28th in points per game (17.0), and 29th in passing yards per game (178.4. The lone bright spot has been Calvin Ridley, who has surpassed 50 receiving yards in six of ten games this season, including each of his last four outings.
For the Titans to stand any chance, protecting the ball will be crucial, and that responsibility starts with Will Levis. Playing on the road in a hostile Houston environment is challenging enough but facing a Texans defense that ranks in the top five for takeaways makes the task even more daunting for the 2-8 Titans. If CJ Stroud and the Texans’ defense can seize control early, this game has the potential to become a blowout.
