The Twins and Yankees will play the third and final game of their three-game series in the Bronx tonight. The Twins parted with a number of important veterans at the trade deadline as they lost ground in the AL Central race and turned into sellers. After dominating the AL East for the majority of the first half, the Yankees are now in third place in the division, behind the Blue Jays and Red Sox. The Yankees' rookie righty Cam Schlittler (1-2, 4.38) will face Twins All-Star right-hander Joe Ryan (11-5, 2.79) in tonight’s pitching matchup.

Before faltering late in the first half and into the second half of the season, the Minnesota Twins were in the AL Central race for a period of time. Team management decided to let go of a number of veterans, especially the team's best bullpen arms. The Twins were 12 games below .500 on the road and five games below .500 overall when before the series in the Bronx. The Twins' troubles at Yankee Stadium continued on Monday night as they lost 6-2 and last night in a 9-1 defeat.

The Twins will try to reassemble a competitive playoff team during the offseason after the roster changes at the deadline. Joe Ryan is the ace on the Twins pitching staff. This season, Ryan has made 23 starts and is 11-5, including 12 quality starts. In 132.1 innings pitched, he has given up just 97 hits. Ryan has an impressive 0.92 WHIP and an ERA of 2.79. Late in the first half, the Yankees appeared to be headed for a second consecutive AL East Division championship. Aaron Judge and the potent Yankees' offense were dominating baseball, and they had a commanding lead over a large portion of the division. Since then, the Yankees have dropped to third place in the division, the bullpen has collapsed, and the bats have been erratic.

Tonight, the Yankees will start rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler in the series finale. This year, Schlittler has not had a strong start and is 1-2 in five starts. In 24.2 innings of work, he has given up 29 hits, including six home runs. Schlittler has a 4.38 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP after walking 12 and striking out 24 batters. The Yankees have lost three of Schlittler’s last five starts, including three straight. In three starts at home, he is 1-1 and has a 4.91 ERA.
