Minnesota vs Chicago | Sunday, November 24, 2024
Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears will host the red-hot Minnesota Vikings in a pivotal NFC North battle on Sunday. While the Bears have fallen to the depths of their division, sitting in fourth place in the NFC North with a record of 4-6, the Vikings are still in contention for the top spot. Minnesota is 8-2 on the season, just one game behind the first-place Detroit Lions (9-1) and just one win ahead of the 7-3 Green Bay Packers. Detroit looks set to win the division, so every win is now crucial in helping Minnesota find one of the wildcard spots.
The Vikings are currently riding a three-game winning streak after tearing through the AFC South in Weeks 9 through 11, securing wins over the Colts, Jaguars, and Titans. While all eyes this season have been on the re-emergence of quarterback Sam Darnold, reviving his career after most fans and analysts had written him off, the storyline for Minnesota throughout their win streak has been their stellar defense. In Weeks 9 through 11, no team has scored more than 13 points against the Vikings, with an average of 11 points allowed to opposing teams.
Although Chicago has a mighty 4-2 record at home this season, their offense will have a tough time putting up points this Sunday. Minnesota allows opponents just 17 points per game this season, which is the fourth-best in the NFL. They are highly effective at stopping the run, allowing a league-best 74.4 rushing yards per game and only 0.4 rushing touchdowns per game, second-best in the entire league. While they do allow over 230 passing yards per game, they have held opponents to a 63.14% completion rate this season, good for eighth in the NFL, and rank in the top three for both sacks and interceptions.
The Bears, who have now lost four straight games, don't necessarily look like they have the firepower on offense to compete with this Vikings defense. Chicago averages just 289 total yards per game this season, which is the fourth-worst in the NFL. Quarterback Caleb Williams, who looked like a potential rookie of the year candidate early this season, has struggled throughout the Bears' losing streak. Over the past four games, Williams has failed to score a single touchdown—either through the air or on the ground, resulting in an average QBR of just 16.2 through Weeks 9 and 10.
If the Bears want a chance at snapping their four-game skid this Sunday, they must rely on their defense. Chicago has held opposing quarterbacks to an average completion percentage of 62.5%, the sixth-best in the NFL. They also rank in the top 10 in passing yards allowed, with a solid 197.4 yards allowed per game. Darnold and the Vikings enter this one as 3.5-point favorites in what is expected to be one of the lowest-scoring games of the weekend.
