YANKEES @ BLUE JAYS 7/3/25

When the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees play the final game of a four-game series tonight, the AL East top spot is on the line. With identical 48-38 records, both teams are now tied for first place, paving the way for this matchup before Independence Day. After winning the first three games by scores of 5-4, 12-5, and 11-9, Toronto is on a roll and will be aiming for a four-game sweep.

For the first time since mid-April, the Yankees have given up sole possession of the AL East lead going into the series finale. With six series losses in their last ten and a 13-18 record in their last 31 games, their recent run has been difficult.

With three hits and three RBIs in Wednesday's loss, including his 31st home run of the year and a game-tying shot in the eighth inning, Aaron Judge continues to be the focal point of the offense. Opponents are working around him. Judge's 22 intentional walks are the most by a Yankee prior to the All-Star break since Mickey Mantle. On Wednesday, Giancarlo Stanton also hit a three-run home run.

Clarke Schmidt (4-4, 3.09 ERA) will start in the series finale in an attempt to steady a pitching staff that has been overworked by Toronto's offense.

Toronto has taken advantage of the situation, winning three games in a row to tie for first place in the division. In the Blue Jays' 11-9 victory on Wednesday, Addison Barger's four RBIs and Davis Schneider's two home runs galvanized the offense with a seven-run first inning. Toronto rallied late despite blowing an eight-run lead, with Barger hitting a clutch RBI single and George Springer scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Since May 28, the Blue Jays have swept past a struggling Yankees team, going 21-10. Chris Bassitt (7-4, 4.29 ERA) will start in an attempt to secure a statement sweep and maintain Toronto's dominance at home. The depth of the lineup has proven crucial, and the bullpen, led by Jeff Hoffman (20th save), has performed well in high-pressure situations. Toronto hopes to complete a flawless series and take sole possession of first place with the Rogers Centre crowd behind them.

With the way the Jays bats are swinging, Bassitt should have plenty of support as he is 5-0 with a 2.60 ERA at home this season. Toronto has now won 6 of its last 7 games. Yesterday’s high-scoring game was typical of Yankees-Blue Jays games of late. A total of 12 of the last 15 games between these two teams have gone Over the total.

BLUE JAYS OVER 3.5 RUNS

The Blue Jays have absolutely owned this series. They have a starting pitcher who hasn’t lost at home and they’ve won 21 of their last 31, yet the Yankees are still favored. Clarke Schmidt has pitched well for the Yankees, but he did have his worst start last time out. He gave up 4 ER to the A’s. Toronto has scored 28 runs in this series so far. They have gone Over this team total in 8 of their last 10 games, 15 of their last 20, and 57 percent of games this season. They’ve also scored at least 4 runs in 11 of the last 19 games against the Yankees.
