YANKEES @ ROYALS 6/10/25

The Yankees knocked Kansas City out of the postseason in 2024. Only one of these teams has been playing like a playoff contender lately. When New York travels to Kansas City for tonight's series opener, the American League East-leading Yankees hope to defeat the Royals for the sixth time in a row.

For the first time since winning the 2015 World Series, Kansas City made a comeback to the postseason last year. But the Royals only won one game in the best-of-five division series against New York after sweeping Baltimore in the wild-card round.

The Yankees have the second-best record in the American League and led the East by 4.5 games going into Monday. That comes after giving up 21 runs in two consecutive defeats to Boston over the weekend.

Kansas City, on the other hand, was 24-16 on May 9 but has since gone 10-16 with an average of 3.3 runs per game. The Royals defeated the lowly Chicago White Sox 7–5 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. Kansas City is currently fourth in the AL Central.

Back in April, the Royals were swept by New York, managing just six runs. During that April series, Judge hit a double and a solo homer while going 7-for-10. During Sunday's 11-7 home loss to the Red Sox, Judge had three hits, including his 22nd and 23rd home runs. He leads the majors with a batting average of .396.

Noah Cameron, a rookie for the Royals (2-1, 0.85 ERA), gets his first look at Judge and the Yankees. Over 31.2 innings, the left-hander from neighboring St. Joseph, Missouri, has given up 15 hits and 10 walks but only three runs.

In a 6-5, 10-inning loss to St. Louis, the Royals' bullpen was unable to maintain a lead despite Cameron giving up two hits in six scoreless innings on Thursday. He is the first pitcher to go six or more innings in his first five career starts and give up one or no runs since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.

Jac Caglianone, another rookie for the Royals, went 2-for-21 in his first five games then had four hits Sunday against Chicago. He will play his first home game on Tuesday since making his debut on June 3.

Max Fried (8-1, 1.78 ERA), who leads the AL in wins and ERA, could present another challenge for Caglianone and the Royals. In a 4-0 victory for New York last Thursday, the left-hander displayed his dominance by striking out seven batters and allowing Cleveland to only muster one hit and two walks.

Fried fanned seven over six innings in the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Royals on April 15 despite giving up five hits and two walks.

Kansas City star Bobby Witt Jr. is 2-for-6 with a double in his career versus Fried. In seven June games, Witt  is hitting .345 with two home runs and six RBIs.

MAX FRIED UNDER 2.5 EARNED RUNS

Fried got back in the saddle after his worst start of the season on May 30. Last time out, Fried pitched six innings of shutout ball. He allowed one hit and he struck out seven as the Yankees beat the Guardians 4-0. The start against the Dodgers at the end of May is the only one of 13 starts in which Fried allowed more than two earned runs. That’s 12 for 13 or 92 percent for the season. He pitched against Kansas City on April 15. Fried pitched 6.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, struck out 7, and allowed just 2 earned runs as the Yankees recorded a 4-2 victory.
