Why Draper is Undervalued
The Elo gap of 187 points looks significant on paper, but it's telling the wrong story. Draper's rating is still catching up after his layoff, while Djokovic's is propped up by a strong Australian Open that feels like a while ago now. Since then, he's dropped sets to Majchrzak and Kovacevic, and has admitted to a lingering right forearm issue. Draper, by contrast, is the defending champion here, 8-0 at this tournament, and looking sharper than anyone expected this early in his comeback.
Court & Conditions
Indian Wells plays neutral-to-slow (CPI 0.17), and it gets even slower under the night session lights. That normally suits Djokovic's grinding style, but it also amplifies Draper's lefty wide serve on the ad court, the ball kicks away and gives the returner less time to recover off the slower bounce.
Tactical Key
Draper's best path through this match is the ad-court wide serve followed by a forehand inside-in. The temptation for lefties is to go inside-out, but that feeds straight into Djokovic's cross-court backhand rally where he's basically unbeatable. The inside-in option changes the direction of play, attacks the forehand wing, which is exactly where that injured forearm lives — and forces shorter rallies before Djokovic can settle into his suffocating rhythm.
Concerns
Draper's not bulletproof yet. The Rinderknech loss in Dubai is a reminder of that, and even a diminished Djokovic brings a level of competitive intensity and experience in these spots that's hard to replicate.
Bottom Line
Draper should be closer to a coin flip than the market likely suggests. There's value on his moneyline if he's a clear underdog, and a strong case for set handicap or total sets markets either way.
