Jacksonville vs. Detroit | Sunday, November 17, 2024
Unfortunately, what was already a pretty dark season for Jacksonville became even darker with
the injury to Trevor Lawrence. He is already ruled out for the game, and it appears there is a
genuine chance he might miss the rest of the season. That is bad news considering how poor
the alternative was against Minnesota. Mac Jones struggled mightily to move the ball,
completely failing to utilize his exciting rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., and also throwing
two crippling interceptions.
At 2-8, it is clear that there is nothing more to play for this season, which increases the
likelihood that Jacksonville keeps Lawrence on the sidelines. That could result in a lot of tough
viewing for Jags fans, making this clash with Detroit much less enticing. With Lawrence under
center, you have to be on your toes for a deep bomb at any time to Thomas Jr., but it is hard to
see Jacksonville launching any meaningful attack with Jones under center. The most likely
scenario here is more interceptions. Detroit is third in the NFL with an average of two takeaways
per game and will be on high alert in this one.
On the topic of interceptions, nobody was as generous to opposing defenses last week as Jared
Goff, who tossed five of them in a game that Detroit somehow still managed to win. It was a
very uncharacteristic performance from Goff, but he benefits from a dream bounce-back
opportunity this week against a dismal Jaguars defense. Jacksonville ranks in the bottom six in
almost all meaningful categories on defense. They are giving up 26.4 points per game, which is
27th in the NFL, and 390.6 yards per game, which is dead last.
They struggle against the run and are third-worst in the NFL when it comes to defending the
pass, giving up 261.2 yards per game through the air. Given that Detroit is scoring the second-
most points per game this year, with 31.6, and ranking inside the top seven for rushing yards
per game and completion percentage, they should be able to have their way with the Jaguars.
Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are the perfect running back duo, with both players
handling 122 carries on the year. Gibbs is the explosive option, averaging 6 yards per carry for
his 727 yards and seven touchdowns, and Montgomery is the bruiser you don’t want to meet in
the fourth quarter, averaging 4.3 yards per carry for his 520 yards and eight touchdowns.
Jacksonville is giving up 129.4 yards per game on the ground, which is 20th in the NFL, and will
prove no match for this elite offensive line and running back tandem.
With those two playing so well, the Lions have been much less dependent on their passing
game, with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta being less involved than they were last year.
Nevertheless, St. Brown has snagged himself seven touchdowns on the season already, and
the emergence of Jameson Williams has given this passing game an explosive element that it
did not have last year. Provided last week’s outing didn’t kickstart a concerning trend of reckless
football from Jared Goff, this team is well on track for a deep playoff run, and the Jags are
surely in for a pummeling.
