It’s almost hard to believe, but the New England Patriots (8-2) are tied with the Colts and Broncos for the best record in the NFL. Fans of the New York Jets could live without the reminder of their rival's heyday. The Patriots are riding a seven-game winning streak into Week 11 and will play the Jets tonight in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Thanks to a run that began on September 28, New England (8-2) has equaled Indianapolis and Denver for the best record. A schedule that gave the Patriots victory laps over bottom-feeders Cleveland, Tennessee, and New Orleans has helped them.
However, the Patriots also defeated Buffalo on the road during this span to seize the lead in the AFC East division. On Sunday, they played four strong quarters to win 28-23 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are currently leading the NFC South. Drake Maye's offensive line improved, giving up just one sack after giving up 16 in the three games prior, and he threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns.
The Patriots are hoping to win eight straight games for the first time since 2019. In addition, it was Tom Brady's last season in New England, and the last time the team began a season 8-2 or better.
With only 792 yards given up in 10 games, New England has the league's best run defense, which might push the faltering Justin Fields to throw more.Even though Fields only went 6 of 11 for 54 yards on Sunday, the Jets (2-7) won their second straight game. New York has chosen Fields to start at quarterback over veteran Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, but all prospects of breaking their 14-year postseason drought have vanished.
"We just want to win," Jets coach Aaron Glenn stated. "I don't care if it's three games. I don't care if it's one game." "The more you win, the more confidence you get as a player, the more confidence you get as a team. That's the only thing that we care about."
Both head coaches have played in the Jets-Pats rivalry: Vrabel from 2001–2008 at the start of the Brady era, and Glenn with the Jets from 1994–2001. The Jets ended that run at the conclusion of 2023 and split the two meetings last year, but the Pats won 15 straight against them from 2016 to 2023.
Will McDonald IV tied a team record by recording four sacks, while New York returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns in the first quarter against Cleveland, the first time in franchise history that the combination happened in the same game. According to Vrabel, the Jets don't appear to be a team that traded away its best defensive players, Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner.
Vrabel remarked, "That didn't show up at all," "I saw an energy, I saw excitement that jumped off the screen. This will be a challenge. I know they'll be ready to go on the road and we'll have to continue to prepare and ultimately play well."
The Patriots' backfield is where they have the most injury concerns. Despite having a knee injury, rookie TreVeyon Henderson (430 yards) worked fully for two days and was not on the injury report on Wednesday. Third-stringer Terrell Jennings (knee) is doubtful, while Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) will miss his third consecutive game.
Austin Hooper (concussion), Christian Elliss (hip), and Kayshon Boutte (hamstring) of New England will not play. Joshua Farmer, a defensive lineman, is doubtful due to an injury.
The Jets will be without their top receiver, Garrett Wilson, for three to four weeks due to a knee sprain. In addition, New York ruled out cornerback Azareye'h Thomas due to a concussion and designated five players as questionable: running back Khalil Herbert (groin), offensive lineman Xavier Newman (ankle), McDonald (quadriceps), and defensive linemen Harrison Phillips (foot) and Braiden McGregor (shoulder).
