In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Indiana Pacers seemed to be seriously hurting the New York Knicks. However, the Pacers' 20-point home lead and the subsequent perception that they were on their way to a 3-0 series lead presented a significant issue.
The Knicks feel very at ease when they are behind. New York overcame a 20-point deficit to win the game on the road for the third time this postseason. When the teams play Game 4 tonight in Indianapolis, the Knicks most recent comeback puts them in a position to tie the series at 2-2.
New York pulled off similar comebacks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Knicks overcame 20-point deficits in the first two games in Boston to win the series in six games. With New York outscoring the Pacers 36–20 in the last 12 minutes of Game 3, the Knicks are now right back in the series.
The only players in franchise history to score 20 or more points in a quarter during a playoff game are Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, who scored 20 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. In Game 1 of the conference semifinals last season, Brunson set a quarter-by-quarter record of 21 points against the Pacers.
Veteran New York coach Tom Thibodeau isn't shocked that his team has won three thrilling comeback wins in the past two playoff series.
Aaron Nesmith, Indiana's forward, sprained his right ankle halfway through the third quarter of Game 3 and is hoping for good news. Rick Carlisle, the coach of the Pacers, described Nesmith as a game-time decision on Monday and listed him as questionable. With 7:03 remaining in Game 3, Nesmith went back to the floor and was not the same in the final moments. He finished with eight points. In Game 1 of this series, Nesmith scored 30 points and made a career-high 8-of-9 three-pointers to help Indiana win 138–135 in overtime.
Tyrese Haliburton, the star point guard for Indiana, will be hoping for a better performance after criticizing himself for the team's subpar 42-point performance in the second half of Game 3. Throughout the series, Haliburton is averaging 21.7 points and 9.7 assists.
Despite only scoring 23 points in Game 3, Brunson is averaging 34 points throughout the series. Both Towns and Josh Hart are anticipated to be available despite suffering knee injuries in Game 3.
