GAMECOCKS @ SOONERS 3/11/26

The 2026 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament kicks off at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, and the opening round features a fascinating matchup between the No. 14 seed South Carolina Gamecocks and the No. 11 seed Oklahoma Sooners. This is a high-stakes "bubble" environment where Porter Moser’s defensive schemes meet a South Carolina squad that has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency throughout the regular season.

The Sooners enter this tournament with significant momentum, having won four of their last five games, including a statement 88-85 victory over Texas to close the regular season. Oklahoma’s offensive efficiency has spiked recently. They shot a blistering 62.22% from the field against Missouri on March 3rd and followed that up with a 44.26% performance against a tough Texas defense.

South Carolina, conversely, has struggled to find their footing, losing seven of their last ten games. While they did manage a narrow 64-61 win over Ole Miss recently, their offensive metrics are concerning. The Gamecocks rank 328th nationally in three-point percentage (31.00%) and 245th in field goal percentage (44.25%). Against an Oklahoma defense that is described as the "ultimate equalizer" in tournament settings, South Carolina will likely find it difficult to keep pace. Oklahoma’s ability to force turnovers and their superior field goal percentage (46.30% season average vs. South Carolina's 44.25%) suggest they can pull away in the second half.

While both teams have seen some "Over" results recently, the tournament atmosphere in Nashville often leads to tighter, more defensive-oriented contests. South Carolina’s offense is notoriously sluggish, averaging only 76.67 points per game (162nd rank), and they have gone "Under" the total in seven of their last eight games. Their recent scoring outputs of 61, 59, 68, and 63 points highlight a team that struggles to reach the 70-point mark against disciplined defenses.

Oklahoma’s defense is the core of their identity under Porter Moser. Although they can score, they are most effective when they dictate the tempo. In their last ten games, South Carolina has only cleared the 80-point mark once. If Oklahoma establishes their defensive rhythm early, this game is likely to settle into a half-court battle. Given South Carolina's poor shooting from deep (31.00%), they lack the "quick-strike" capability to force a high-scoring shootout.

The statistical mismatch in shooting is the most glaring factor here. Oklahoma shoots nearly 5% better from beyond the arc than South Carolina. In a neutral site like Bridgestone Arena, perimeter shooting often becomes the deciding factor. Furthermore, South Carolina has been a poor bet as an underdog this season, posting a 4-17 record straight up in that role. Oklahoma has been reliable when favored, going 12-2 straight up as the betting favorite.

News reports indicate that Florida and Arkansas are the heavy favorites to win the SEC tournament, but Oklahoma is viewed as a "dangerous squad" capable of moving up seed lines for the NCAA Tournament. This motivation, combined with South Carolina's offensive droughts—highlighted by a 30.91% shooting performance against Missouri in February—gives the Sooners a distinct advantage tonight.

FREE PICK: OKLAHOMA -7.5

On Jan. 20, South Carolina beat Oklahoma 85-76. Then, they proceeded to lose 7 straight games and finished the season with just 2 wins in their final 12 games. Oklahoma, on the other hand, suffered through a 9-game midseason losing streak only to win 6 of its final 8 games. They closed the season with an upset of rival Texas in overtime. This is simply taking the hotter team right now. The Sooners have the Four Factors edge too. OU is a much better (top 50) shooting team - 55.1% eFG vs. 50.3% eFG. South Carolina also struggles in the underdog role - 4-17 SU - while Oklahoma has been strong as a favorite (12-2). The Sooners have also covered in 4 of their last 5 games and 6 of their last 8 in SEC play.
