COACH RICK CBB PREVIEWS

COMMODORES @ CORNHUSKERS 3/21/26

The stage is set for a high-stakes Second Round clash in the South Region as the 5-seed Vanderbilt Commodores take on the 4-seed Nebraska Cornhuskers. This matchup features a fascinating contrast: Vanderbilt’s elite, top-10 offensive efficiency going up against a Nebraska squad that boasts a top-10 adjusted defensive ranking.

Vanderbilt enters this matchup as a slight favorite, and the statistical profile suggests they have the edge to cover this small number. While Nebraska’s defense is elite (7th nationally), Vanderbilt’s offense is even more potent, ranking 6th in adjusted efficiency. The Commodores have shown they can handle high-level competition, evidenced by their recent dominant 91-74 win over a strong Florida team in the SEC Tournament.

Vanderbilt’s offensive versatility is their greatest strength. They rank 31st in two-point percentage (56.9%) and 80th in three-point percentage (35.6%), making them difficult to shut down entirely. Nebraska’s defense excels at running teams off the three-point line (8th in 3P% defense), but Vanderbilt’s ability to score inside through players like Jalen Washington (61.1% on two-pointers) and Tyler Tanner (54.7% on two-pointers) provides a necessary counter-punch. Furthermore, Vanderbilt is one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the country, ranking 4th nationally at 79.4%. In a game projected to be decided by a possession or two, that proficiency at the charity stripe is often the difference-maker.

While Nebraska typically prefers a slower pace (220th in tempo), Vanderbilt’s ability to force a more uptempo game (98th in tempo) and their sheer offensive efficiency point toward the Over. Vanderbilt has scored 80 or more points in four of their last five games, including a 91-point outburst against Florida and 86 against Tennessee.

Nebraska’s offense, while not as highly ranked as Vanderbilt's, is still very efficient, ranking 31st in effective field goal percentage (55.4%). They feature elite shooting from Pryce Sandfort, who hits 40.8% of his threes, and Sam Hoiberg (39.5% from deep). Nebraska’s tendency to shoot the three (9th in 3PT rate) can lead to quick scoring bursts. When you combine two teams that both rank in the top 31 nationally in effective field goal percentage, a total in the mid-140s feels too low, even with Nebraska's strong defensive metrics.

The Commodores have been battle-tested in the SEC, playing the 12th hardest schedule in the country. They have a "Luck" factor rank of 130, suggesting their 27-8 record is a very accurate reflection of their skill rather than fortunate bounces.

Nebraska has had an incredible season, but they have shown some vulnerability recently against elite competition, losing to Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament by 16 points. Vanderbilt’s offense is currently peaking at the right time. Over the last 10 games, the Commodores have an efficiency rating of 131.0 (7th best in that span). With the game expected to be close, Vanderbilt's superior free-throw shooting and offensive rebounding (31.2% vs Nebraska's 26.6%) give them more paths to victory in a tight tournament environment.

As mentioned, Vanderbilt is the 4th best free-throw shooting team in the nation (79.4%). Nebraska’s defense is disciplined (7th in FTR defense), but Vanderbilt’s aggressive offensive style often forces opponents into difficult positions. If this game comes down to a free-throw shooting contest in the final two minutes, Vanderbilt has a massive statistical advantage over Nebraska (75.3% FT).

FREE PICK: VANDERBILT ML

Over at least the last decade, offense wins championships in college basketball. While defense is important, it’s the more efficient offenses that excel in the NCAA tournament. Of the past 17 national champions, only 6 ranked in the top 10 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Fourteen of them ranked in the top 10 in offensive efficiency. Vandy is the better offensive team tonight, ranking 6th in offensive efficiency. Nebraska ranks 54th. Nebraska is the better defensive team, but the Cornhuskers do give up a lot of threes and Vandy shoots 36% (top-100) from behind the arc. In a tight game, I like the better shooting team and the better FT shooting team. Vandy shoots slightly better - 47.5% to 46.5% - from the floor than Nebraska and the Commodores own the FT line - 4th in the nation at 79.3%
