BOILERMAKERS @ WILDCATS 3/28/26

The West Region final at the SAP Center in San Jose features a heavyweight clash between the No. 1 seed Arizona Wildcats and the No. 2 seed Purdue Boilermakers. Arizona enters this matchup after a historic 109-point offensive explosion against Arkansas, while Purdue survived a two-point nail-biter against Texas. This is a rematch of a December 2023 contest where Purdue came out on top 92-84, but both rosters have seen significant infusions and tactical shifts since that meeting.

Arizona is currently favored by 5.5 to 6.5 points across major markets. The Wildcats are playing near-flawless basketball, ranking 6th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency (128.0) and 2nd in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (91.9). Their athleticism and physicality present a major mismatch for a Purdue team that has struggled with perimeter speed. Arizona has a 21-14 record against the spread this season, providing a 13.76% ROI for bettors.

Purdue’s defense sits outside the top 30 nationally in efficiency and has shown vulnerability against high-powered offenses, allowing 77 points to Texas and 90+ to Michigan and Wisconsin late in the season. Arizona’s transition offense, which ranks 8th nationally in total rebound rate, is designed to exploit these defensive lapses. With the Wildcats shooting a blistering 64% in their last outing, they have the momentum to cover this mid-single-digit spread.

This matchup features two of the most efficient offenses in the country. Purdue ranks 1st in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency (133.6), while Arizona ranks 6th. Arizona is averaging 85.4 PPG over their last 10 games and has reached 80+ points in nearly every tournament game under Tommy Lloyd.

Purdue’s interior defense ranks 249th nationally in opposing two-point shooting percentage (53.3%), which plays right into Arizona's hands, as 73.6% of the Wildcats' shots come from inside the arc. Conversely, Purdue is the best three-point shooting team in the Big Ten (39%). Given the elite offensive metrics on both sides and Arizona's preferred high tempo (46th nationally), this game could fly past the 153.5 mark. The total opened at 151.5 and has already moved upward two points.

Braden Smith is the floor general for Purdue, playing 85.9% of available minutes with a high usage rate of 26.5%. While Arizona’s defense is elite, they often allow opposing point guards to find scoring opportunities while they focus on taking away the interior. Smith has an offensive rating of 120.4 and is a 36.1% shooter from deep. In a high-stakes Elite Eight game, Purdue will rely on Smith’s veteran leadership and shot-making. Arizona’s heavy-pressure defense can lead to quick passes and open looks for a guard of Smith's caliber.

Fletcher Loyer has been the definition of "clutch" during this tournament run. He has made four three-pointers in each of his last three NCAA Tournament games, shooting a staggering 60% from deep in that span. Overall, he has hit 3+ shots from behind the arc in six straight games and is shooting 43.5% from beyond the arc for the season.

Arizona’s defense is designed to shut down the paint, which will likely force Purdue to look for perimeter scoring. Loyer’s volume has increased significantly in March, and he has recorded 3+ made threes in 12 of his last 17 games. Against an Arizona perimeter defense that can be exploited, Loyer is in a prime position to continue his hot streak.

Arizona’s defense is elite at protecting the rim, ranking 2nd in the country in two-point defense. Purdue, meanwhile, struggles in this area, ranking 249th. Arizona’s Koa Peat, who just dropped 21 points on Arkansas, could be a nightmare matchup for Purdue’s forwards.

Arizona wants to run. They rank 46th in tempo and use a heavy-pressure, full-court defense to force quick, inefficient shots. Purdue is much more methodical (327th in tempo) but boasts the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country (2.2). Whether Purdue can maintain their composure under Arizona's pressure will decide the game.

Arizona’s Brayden Burries and Koa Peat are both freshmen and both have been dominant in the tournament. It’s likely that both are top-10 NBA draft picks this summer. Burries has been lethal from deep, knocking down 9 of his last 12 three-point attempts. Purdue will need their veteran guards to outplay these high-upside freshmen to stay alive.

FREE PICK: TREY KAUFMAN-RENN UNDER 17.5 POINTS

TKR has scored 19+ points in four straight games. Tonight, it’s a sell high on him as he faces the No. 2-ranked 2PT FG% defense in the nation. The Wildcats limit opponents to 44.2% shooting on 2PT attempts. TKR will have his hands full on the interior with 7-2 Motiejus Krivas. Arizona’s size and athleticism will limit TKR tonight. He has actually gone Under this number in 24 of 36 Purdue games this season. He’s had issues with strong defensive teams going Under this number in games against UCLA, Nebraska, Michigan State, and Iowa.
