The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres continue their NL West rivalry tonight at Petco Park. After the Giants secured a narrow 3-2 victory yesterday, both teams are looking to find their offensive rhythm in what has been a pitcher-dominated start to the 2026 season.

The Giants (1-3) finally broke into the win column yesterday but have struggled significantly at the plate, scoring only four runs through their first four games. The addition of stars like Rafael Devers, Luis Arraez, and Willy Adames hasn't yielded immediate results, as the team is currently sporting a collective batting average of just .143.

The Padres (1-3) are in a similar boat, having been outscored 13-4 in their opening series against Detroit before yesterday's loss. Tonight features an intriguing pitching matchup between San Francisco's workhorse Logan Webb and San Diego's newcomer German Marquez, who is making his team debut after coming over from Colorado.

The statistical evidence heavily favors a low-scoring affair tonight. San Francisco's offense has been historically cold to start the year, failing to record a single home run through four games. While they are due for regression, Petco Park is a notoriously difficult environment for hitters, ranking 12th in the league with a pitcher-friendly park factor of 98.

Webb is a master of inducing soft contact, finishing last season with a 45.2% ground ball rate. On the other side, Marquez went 3-16 last season with a 6.70 ERA, but those numbers are typical for guys who have to pitch a majority of the time at Coors Field.

Despite the Giants' slow start, Webb remains one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. He has hit the over on his strikeout line in 60% of his last 10 games and 65% of his last 20 games. In his most recent outing this season, he racked up 7 strikeouts against the Yankees, showing that his command is already in mid-season form.

Webb has a deep history against this Padres roster, having faced them for 217 plate appearances. He has maintained a respectable 20.7% strikeout rate against them. Specifically, he has dominated key Padres hitters like Jake Cronenworth (9 Ks in 34 ABs) and Manny Machado (8 Ks in 41 ABs). Given the Padres' early-season offensive struggles (hitting just .204 as a team), Webb is well-positioned to clear this relatively low bar.

If you're looking for a reliable bat in a sea of struggling hitters, Xander Bogaerts is the likely choice. He has been the most consistent performer for San Diego, hitting the over on his hits prop in 9 of his last 10 games. He has at least one hit in 3 of the Padres 4 games this season.

While Webb is a tough matchup, Bogaerts has handled him better than most. In 27 career at-bats against Webb, Bogaerts has recorded 6 hits, including 2 doubles. His ability to avoid strikeouts (21.4% K rate vs Webb) and put the ball in play makes him a safe bet in the Padres' lineup to record at least one base hit tonight.

Heliot Ramos has been one of the few bright spots for the Giants' offense so far this season. He has hit the over on his hits prop in 80% of his last 10 games and 75% of his games so far this season. Ramos matches up exceptionally well against right-handed pitching and has a history of success against the Padres. In 2024, he hit the over in 100% of his games against San Diego (6-for-6). He also performs significantly better on the road, hitting the over in 70.51% of his away games last season. Ramos bats .300 against Marquez and the last time he faced him, Ramos hit a three-run homer.

Giants Lineup Shift: After failing to score in their first two games, the Giants moved Jung Hoo Lee to the leadoff spot. He responded by scoring the team's first run of the year. Expect him to remain at the top of the order to set the table for Arraez and Devers.

San Diego is dealing with a depleted pitching staff, with Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, and Griffin Canning all currently sidelined. This puts immense pressure on Marquez to provide length in his debut.
