Butler rallied in the second half to win its first round game against Utah. Coach Rick picked that winner and now the Bulldogs will face Boise State. The Broncos were an easy first round winner over George Washington. Boise held the Revolutionaries to just 59 points and won by 30.
Boise State is probably the best team in this tournament. One could argue that the Broncos belonged in the Big Dance ahead of San Diego State, a team they beat in the Mountain West Conference tournament. However, the Broncos didn't make it and now have something to prove.
ise State is a very strong defensive team. The Broncos rank 35th in the nation in scoring defense giving up just 66.3 points per game to opponents. Boise State won 8 of its last 10 games of the season and defense was a big reason why. The Broncos held 8 of those opponents to less than 70 points. Ironically, the two losses Boise suffered were both to Colorado State which earned the Mountain West's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Broncos also rank 309th in the nation in possessions per game. They like to play at a slower pace. Butler ranks in the 200s in the same category. The Bulldogs went 6-11 SU in road and neutral site games this season. In those 17 games, Butler averaged 70.7 points per game. That is five points less than their season scoring average.
When you put it all together, it's why I like the Under. Six of Boise State's last eight games have gone Under the total. In a slower paced game tonight, back the Under 154.5.
