WOLVERINES @ WILDCATS 4/4/26

This Final Four showdown between the Michigan Wolverines and the Arizona Wildcats features the two remaining No. 1 seeds in what many consider the true national championship game. Michigan enters as a slim -1.5 favorite, but the statistical profiles of these two juggernauts suggest a game that will be decided by the thinnest of margins.

While Michigan is the slight favorite, the analytical edge lies with the Wildcats in a neutral-site environment. Arizona has been a powerhouse away from home, boasting an 11-0 record in neutral-site games this season. More importantly, they are a dominant 10-1 ATS in those contests.

The deciding factor in this game will likely be the extra scoring chances metric. Arizona ranks 30th in the country, averaging +3.4 extra scoring chances per game. Conversely, Michigan struggles with ball security, ranking in the bottom half of the country in turnovers per possession and failing to force turnovers on the defensive end (averaging -0.6 extra chances).

Arizona’s defense is elite at protecting the rim, ranking 2nd nationally in opponent two-point field goal percentage defense (44.1%). This poses a massive problem for Michigan’s offensive scheme, which often relies on high-percentage looks inside.

Arizona also leads all Power Conference teams with a 44% free throw rate. They excel at drawing contact and getting to the line, which allows them to score even when their perimeter shots aren't falling. In a tight game that could be decided at the free throw line, this is a huge advantage.

Despite both teams having high-octane offenses, the defensive intensity of a Final Four matchup often leads to a lower-scoring affair than the season averages suggest. Arizona ranks 1st in the nation in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (91.6), while Michigan is right behind them at 3rd (92.1). Both teams allow an average of just 1.09 points per shot, which is tied for the best mark in Division 1.

Michigan’s defense is historically good at forcing tough looks, ranking 1st in the country in effective Field Goal percentage defense (44.9%). Arizona is nearly as good, ranking 2nd (45.0%). While both teams can run, the stakes of the Final Four often lead to more half-court execution. With both teams ranking in the top 3 for defensive rebounding, second-chance points will be incredibly hard to come by, keeping the total suppressed.

The Wildcats have shown a higher ceiling in high-pressure games, evidenced by their recent 109-88 demolition of Arkansas and a 79-64 win over No. 2 Purdue. Arizona has won 13 straight games over teams ranked in the top-10 in KenPom.

Over their last 10 games, Arizona’s offense has reached another level, ranking 3rd in the country in efficiency (132.7) during that span. Arizona’s frontcourt pairing of Koa Peat and Motiejus Krivas (7'2") matches up perfectly with Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara (7'3"). However, Peat’s versatility and ability to hit fadeaway jumpers give Arizona a dynamic scoring option that is difficult for traditional bigs to guard.

While the spread is narrow, Arizona is receiving 63% of the betting handle on the moneyline, suggesting that larger, sharper wagers are backing the Wildcats to win outright.

FREE PICK: ARIZONA +1.5

This should be an epic battle. Both teams rank in the top-5 in the nation in Adjusted Offensive and Defensive Efficiency. The way to beat Michigan comes by hitting threes. Wisconsin hit 15 threes in its win over the Wolverines. But, Purdue beat Michigan in the Big Ten tournament by getting to the free throw line more often. Arizona is elite at doing just that. The Wildcats rank in the top 20 in the nation in free throw rate and they can hit the three (36%, 62nd) when needed. Arizona also ranks in the top-30 in extra scoring chances per game while Michigan has difficulties with turnovers (158th in turnovers per possession). Arizona has won 13 straight games over teams ranked in KenPom’s top-10. FIve of those wins came by an average of 9 points.
