COACH RICK MLB PREVIEWS
GUARDIANS @ DODGERS 4/1/26
The Cleveland Guardians (3-3) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1) wrap up their high-profile interleague series tonight at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium. After the Dodgers secured a 4-1 victory last night behind a strong performance from Shohei Ohtani, the series is currently deadlocked at one game apiece. Tonight’s matchup features a fascinating pitching duel between Cleveland’s young right-hander Gavin Williams and the Dodgers’ Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
The primary narrative of this series has been dominant pitching and limited scoring. The Under has cashed in both games of this series so far, with an average of just 5.5 combined runs per game. Cleveland has struggled significantly at the plate when they don't win, scoring one or zero runs in all three of their losses this season. Furthermore, the Guardians have cashed the Under in 39 of their last 60 road games, a trend that aligns perfectly with the current environment at Dodger Stadium.
The pitching matchup further supports a low-scoring affair. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was stellar in his debut, posting a 0.83 WHIP and striking out six over six innings. On the other side, Williams recorded a 12.6 K/9 rate, but he walked 6 batters and gave up a home run. With both bullpens relatively rested and the Dodgers allowing just 2.6 runs per game this season, offense will be at a premium tonight.
The Dodgers have won four of their first five games, and their pitching staff has been elite, holding opponents to a 1.00 WHIP (among the best in MLB). Yamamoto’s ability to command the zone (0.0 BB/9 in his first start) creates a massive advantage over Williams, who struggled with his command in his debut, walking six batters in just five innings.
Cleveland’s lineup is currently batting just .189 in righty-vs.-righty matchups since the start of 2025, which is the lowest mark in the league. Facing a pitcher of Yamamoto's caliber, who features a 33.3% strikeout rate against current Guardians hitters in a limited sample, suggests Cleveland will struggle to keep pace if the Dodgers' offense can scratch across a few early runs.
Shohei Ohtani’s plate discipline has been a major factor early this season. He has recorded at least one walk in 75% of his games this season (3 out of 4) and has an 80% hit rate over his last five games. In his career against Williams, Ohtani has already drawn a walk in one of his four plate appearances, and Williams’ recent struggles with command (6 walks in his last start) make this a very likely outcome.
Williams posted a staggering 10.8 BB/9 in his first start of the year. Pitchers often approach Ohtani with extreme caution, preferring to nibble at the corners rather than challenge him in the heart of the zone. Given Williams' current lack of precision and Ohtani's high walk rate (averaging 1.0 walks over his last 20 games), this prop offers a high-probability floor.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto enters with a 0.83 WHIP and 9.0 K/9, while Williams carries a 1.60 WHIP and a concerning 10.8 BB/9. The Dodgers' ability to limit free passes gives them a massive edge in run prevention.
Guardians OF Chase DeLauter (AL Player of the Week) is expected to be available after X-rays on his foot came back negative. However, he is dealing with a significant bruise which could impact his mobility.
UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium is playing as a pitcher-friendly environment tonight. The park factor for runs is 106, but the home run factor is 131, meaning while runs are hard to come by, the long ball is the primary way teams are scoring.
Cleveland has struggled to find offensive consistency on the road, alternating wins and losses in their first six games. They have failed to score more than one run in any of their losses this season.

FREE PICK: SHOHEI OHTANI OVER 0.5 WALKS
Williams had command issues in his first start this season and, historically, he’s had issues pitching against the Dodgers. In three starts, Williams has a 23% walk rate against LA. Ohtani is arguably the best player in the history of MLB. As a result, pitchers often don’t give him many hittable pitches. Ohtani tends to draw walks and he has done so at least once in 4 of the Dodgers 5 games so far. If you go back to last season, Ohtani drew at least one walk in 53 percent of games he played. If you narrow it down to his last 20 games, he’s gone Over this prop 65 percent of the time. Williams walked 6 batters in his first start against Seattle. Expect him to struggle tonight.
