In starts against the Giants and Cardinals, Valdez gave up 12 combined earned runs in 9 innings of work. Likewise, Cease is 1-1 on the season with an uncharacteristic 6.64 ERA. Most of that comes from his start against the A's on April 8. Cease gave up 9 earned runs in just 4 innings.
His last time out, Cease held the MLB scoring leader, the Cubs, to 2 ER in 5.2 innings. San Diego went on to win that game 10-4. The Padres have won 3 of Cease's 4 starts this season.
ease also has very good numbers against this current Astros lineup. Houston currently ranks in the bottom 10 of MLB in ISO and batting average against right-handed pitchers. San Diego, on the other hand, has strong numbers - low K rate for one - against left-handers like Valdez.
San Diego has excelled in two-out situations and in situations with runners in scoring position. Plus, the Padres have the best bullpen in the majors. San Diego's bullpen ERA is just 1.65. Houston won the first two games of this series, which makes it a great time to take the Padres at plus-money tonight.
