GUARDIANS @ ATHLETICS 5/1/26

The Cleveland Guardians (16-16) travel to Sutter Health Park to take on the Oakland Athletics (17-14) tonight. This matchup features two young starters looking to establish themselves, with Joey Cantillo taking the mound for Cleveland against the A's J.T. Ginn. While the Guardians have struggled with consistency recently, losing four of their last five games, the Athletics come in hot after winning two straight against Kansas City and 6 of their last 9 games.

ANOTHER UNDER AT SUTTER HEALTH PARK?

The statistical profile for both offenses suggests a lower-scoring affair than the 9.5 line implies. Cleveland’s offense has been stagnant, ranking 28th in the league in runs scored (3.95 per game) and dead last (30th) in total hits. While Joey Cantillo has struggled with walks (3.9 per nine innings), he has maintained an impressive 2.97 ERA and a high strikeout rate of 10.3 per nine innings, which should help him navigate out of jams against an Oakland lineup that ranks 21st in strikeouts.

Furthermore, the Athletics have trended heavily toward the Under recently. In their last five games, the Under has hit four times, including the last three games at home. Oakland's pitching staff has been surprisingly effective at home, and while J.T. Ginn has a concerning 4.88 FIP, his actual ERA remains a solid 3.24. With both teams struggling to string together hits—Cleveland averaging just 7.35 per game—expect a pitcher-oriented battle.

BACK THE SHORT HOME FAVORITE

The Athletics hold a significant situational advantage in this matchup. Oakland has been excellent as an underdog this season, posting a 12-10 record in that spot, and they are currently 17-14 overall. They are coming off back-to-back wins against the Royals, showing improved offensive life with 11 runs combined in those two contests. Conversely, Cleveland has dropped four of its last five games and scored three or fewer runs in four of those five matchups.

Ginn has shown poise in limited action, and while his peripherals suggest some regression, he faces a Guardians lineup that is historically poor at generating hits this season. Oakland's bullpen has also been more reliable lately compared to Cleveland's 20th-ranked relief unit (4.34 ERA). With the home-field advantage at Sutter Health Park and the Guardians' current offensive slump, the value lies with the A's.

BEST PLAYER PROPS TONIGHT

Shea Langeliers is the clear engine of the Athletics' offense right now. Over his last 10 games, he is batting .295 with a .470 slugging percentage. He has been particularly effective at home, averaging 1.3 hits and 2.3 total bases per game this season. Langeliers accounts for a staggering 18.2% of the Athletics' total hits and 13.9% of their total bases over the recent stretch.

He faces Joey Cantillo, a left-handed pitcher who, despite a good ERA, is prone to walks and deep counts. Langeliers has shown the ability to capitalize on mistakes, recording two hits or more in three of his last four games. Given his current form and his role as the primary power threat in the Oakland lineup, he is well-positioned to clear his 1.5 Total Bases line.

NEWS & NOTES

The Guardians are currently dealing with a significant offensive identity crisis. Ranking near the bottom of the league in almost every major hitting category, they are relying heavily on their young pitching to keep them in games. The injury to Gabriel Arias (10-Day IL, hamstring) further thins a lineup that already struggles to produce runs. While Cantillo has been a bright spot, his high walk rate (3.9 BB/9) is a ticking time bomb against an Oakland team that ranks 5th in hits per game.

Oakland, meanwhile, is finding ways to win despite their own pitching inconsistencies. The Athletics have been one of the best teams in the league against the spread (19-12 ATS), particularly on the road, but they have also defended their home turf well recently. The narrative for tonight centers on whether Cleveland's elite starting pitching can stifle an Oakland offense that has been surprisingly productive, or if the Guardians' lack of run support will once again lead to a narrow defeat.

FREE PICK: F5 UNDER 5.5

The game total tonight is 9.5, which is typical at Sutter Health Park. You can get the F5 Under 5.5 at -130 and that is the play. Both pitchers tonight - Cantillo and Ginn - have ERAs below 3.50 and they typically do not allow more than 2 ER while pitching 5 innings. Cleveland ranks 27th in MLB in scoring, averaging 3.84 runs per game. The A’s offense is inconsistent and if these two teams just hit their average runs per the F5, they will fall over a run short of 5.5. The No. 1 F5 Under team in MLB is the Guardians. They only average 1.75 runs in the F5 and their F5 O/U record is 9-21-2.
