On paper, this one looks like a really good pitching matchup. Tylor Megill is 3-4 with a 3.74 ERA, 56 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. Garrett Crochet of Boston is 4-3 with a 2.00 ERA. Two solid pitchers with respectable ERAs. However, if you dig deeper you'll find that Boston and Crochet have the advantage here.
Megill started the season with a bang. At the end of April, he was 3-2 with a 1.74 ERA. Since then, he's regressed. In three starts in the month of May, Megill has given up 4, 4, and 4 earned runs. His ERA for the month? 8.76!
On the other side is Crochet, who will likely be in the thick of the AL Cy Young race come season's end. He had a few issues pitching at Fenway early this season, but he has adjusted and has been pretty much the opposite of Megill in May.
Crochet has allowed just 4 ER across 19 innings in three starts in May. His ERA for the month is 1.89 right now. Boston is also one of the more profitable F5 teams in baseball. The Red Sox are 23-15-11 on the F5 ML this season. At home at Fenway, they are 11-8-5.
The Mets are actually pretty profitable on the F5 ML as well. The problem is that they are really good at home and not so good on the road. The Mets are 9-12-5 on the F5 ML in road games this season. The advantage lies with Crochet over Megill early in this game.
