Jesus Luzardo starts for the Phillies and he has been very good all season long. Luzardo hasn't lost yet. He's 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA. Philly has won each of his last five starts. That's because Luzardo held all five opponents to two earned runs or less.
He's coming off a beauty of a start last time out. Luzardo pitched at Colorado and we all know how difficult it can be to pitch at Coors Field. Luzardo pitched six innings, allowed just two hits, and one earned run. He also struck out 10 as the Phillies won that game 7-4.
On the other side, Gunnar Hoglund starts for the A's and he has been pretty much the opposite of Luzardo. Hoglund is 1-2 on the season with an ERA of 5.06. Don't expect much from Hoglund as his expected numbers are even higher. The A's have lost his last three starts and in the last two Hoglund has served up 5 home runs and 9 total earned runs.
Philly should be able to get to Hoglund early which is why I like them in the First Five. Philadelphia is 26-15-10 on F5 moneyline this season and 7-2-1 in their past 10 games. Luzardo trumps Hoglund and we avoid any late-game ridiculousness.
