This game was rained out yesterday and will be the first game of a doubleheader today. The pitching matchup remains the same.
Remember when you were playing Little League baseball and you'd go to that big tournament every year? You'd face that one 12-year-old pitcher who was well over 6-feet tall and looked like he had a full beard. Yeah, that's what tonight will be for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The pitcher in question is reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. He is 7-2 this season with a 1.99 ERA and he is facing a Pittsburgh lineup that has played better recently, but is still terrible. The Pirates rank dead last in MLB in scoring and bottom-5 in most offensive categories.
Skubal is even better when he pitches at Comerica Park. He's 5-0 in his home starts this season and his ERA at home drops down to 1.72. Skubal has allowed just one earned run over his last four starts.
Andrew Heaney starts for Pittsburgh and while he has pitched well with a 3.33 ERA, he does give up a lot of base hits - almost 9 per game. That's dangerous against a Tigers team that ranks fifth in the majors in scoring.
