If you just look at A's pitcher Jeffrey Springs on paper, you'll miss it. Springs is 5-5 with a 4.52 ERA. Nothing special, right? Springs has three straight quality starts - at least 6 IP and 3 ER or less. He pitches for the A's so they found ways to lose two of those games. Springs xERA is closer to 4 than 5 and he'll face a Cleveland team tonight that is awful against lefties.
It's well-known that the Guardians struggle against left-handers. Over the 30 to 40 days or so, Cleveland ranks 26th in OPS, 29th in ISO, and they have a strikeout rate of 25 percent. It's a strong sample size too with over 350 plate appearances.
The A's are still the A's, but they've been competitive - at least early - in the last several games. They have actually won 5 of their last 7 games. The A's have also been profitable on the F5 run line. They are 7-3 over their last 10 games.
Part of the reason why is young players like Nick Kurtz. Kurtz has hit 8 home runs in his last 14 games. He also hit three game-winning dingers in the A's last 5 games. Springs will pitch well enough tonight to keep this one close.
