At YLose, we are not big on MLB doubleheaders. One of the big reasons why has to do with lineup changes. Playing 18 innings in a span of about 12 hours isn't easy. MLB managers will make changes to their lineups, oftentimes depending upon how the first game plays out.
Today, KC and St. Louis will play Game 1 at 1:45 p.m. Game 2 starts at 7:45 p.m. At an average game length of 2 hours and 38 minutes, Game 1 should conclude by 4:30 p.m. That leaves roughly three hours to figure out how to play Game 2. You'll have to find out who's playing and who isn't. Will the listed pitchers start?
It's a lot and it's why we typically pass on doubleheaders. However, there has been an interesting trend with doubleheaders in 2025. There have been 14 played thus far this season. There have been eight sweeps with five of those sweeps by the home team.
The bigger trend is the Over in Game 2. One of the other factors involved is bullpen usage in Game 1. Depending upon how it plays out, a lot of the best relief arms may get used up in Game 1. That leaves teams susceptible to more hit and run production. We've seen that this year in Game 2 of doubleheaders.
Of the 14 Game 2s played this season, the Over is king. The Over is 11-2-1 in those games with Game 2 averaging a total of 12.5 runs. Cole Ragans and Matthew Liberatore will start Game 2 and both are solid pitchers. But, Ragans has given up 4 ER in each of his last two starts and Liberatore had his worst outing this season last week when he gave up 4 ER to the Rangers.
