The White Sox have surprised everyone, winning their last three straight and taking 4 of their last five games. What makes that even more impressive is that they just won their series against the AL Central-leading Tigers and have guaranteed a series victory over the Royals already.
Chicago has not swept a series this season. They were actually in a similar situation earlier this season. At the beginning of May, the White Sox took 2 of 3 games from Miami and then won the first two games of their series against Cincinnati. They ended up losing Game 3 to the Reds, 7-1.
The White Sox will be in a tough spot here today. They will start reliever Mike Vasil and then continue with a bullpen game against the Royals. The issue with that is the White Sox bullpen isn't very good. They have an MLB-worst six saves and the third-most walks (109) of any bullpen.
Kansas City will start Michael Lorenzen, who has been awful in his last two starts. On May 20, Lorenzen had a 3.77 ERA. It's now at 5.12 thanks to 11 base hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, in 9.2 innings against San Francisco and Cincinnati. That said, Lorenzen has, historically, been good against the White Sox.
Last year while with Texas, Lorenzen made one start against the White Sox. He pitched 5 innings, allowed 2 ER, and the Rangers beat Chicago 4-3. Lorenzen has started 6 games against the White Sox and has a 2.20 ERA in 36.2 innings. He can bounce back against this lineup and KC should get after the White Sox bullpen. And, don't forget, only about 25 percent of all three-game series result in a sweep.
