DETROIT @ PITTSBURGH (DET -130, 7.5)
PIRATES +1.5
The Pirates won the opening game of the series on Paul Skenes day. Skenes pitched 6 scoreless innings and the Pirates offense generated enough runs to grab a 3-0 lead. It was Pittsburgh's 8th win in its last 11 home games.
Tonight, Mitch Keller goes for the Bucs. He's only 3-10, but has a 3.48 ERA. He's allowed 2 ER or less in each of his last 6 starts. The Pirates only won three of those six. Two of the wins were at home against the Cardinals and Mets.
Casey Mize starts for the Tigers. I would expect a bit of regression for Mize in the second half. His xERA is pretty much in line with his ERA, but his xFIP is over 4.00 compared to his 3.15 ERA. His hard hit rate is just over 40 percent and we started to see some of that regression just before the All-Star break.
Mize gave up 6 ER in just 3 innings in his last start before the break against Seattle. Then, he pitched 2/3 of an inning in the All-Star game and gave up a home run to Arizona's Corbin Carroll.
Since the All-Star break, the Tigers have scored 0, 1, 2, and 0 runs in their four games. The offense just isn't there. Don't expect the Pirates to do much either, but they should do enough to keep this one close.
