The Cardinals return home after losing two of three games at Colorado. St. Louis was also swept by the DBacks in their first series post-All Star Break. Historically, teams coming off a Coors Field series with no rest have some sluggish bats in that next game.
St. Louis was sluggish anyway in their first six games since the break. The Cardinals scored 3 runs or less in 4 of the 6 games. Three of the Cardinals last four went Under the game total. What's interesting is that the F5 total has gone Over in 9 straight for the Cardinals. That's primarily due to poor pitching and defense.
Tonight, the Cardinals will put Sonny Gray on the mound. He got spanked in his last start, giving up 11 hits, 2 homers, and 8 earned runs. However, he typically has pitched well at home. This season, he is 6-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 12 starts at Busch Stadium. Gray also has pretty strong numbers against Padres hitters. In three career starts against San Diego, he is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA.
Yu Darvish gets the start for the Padres. This will be his fourth since returning from injury. He continues to improve. In 9 career starts against St. Louis, Darvish hasn't given up a ton of runs. He has a 3.20 ERA against the Cardinals and he has great strikeout numbers - 68 Ks in 59 IP. He may want to avoid Nolan Arenado though, who has hit .429 and has 3 HR off Darvish in 21 at-bats.
