NEW ENGLAND @ NY JETS (NYJ -6.5, 39.5)
UNDER 39.5
There's no more Belichick, but this one should still be a classic AFC East battle. There's no question what each team wants to do tonight - run the football! New England is fifth in the NFL in run play percentage and they are tied for fourth in average rushing yards per game. The Jets haven't been as successful on the ground, but they will try to establish Breece Hall and rookie Braelon Allen.
Both of these defenses have been pretty stout. Aaron Rodgers has been extremely average so far this season and both teams rank in the top 10 in punt rate per drive. You know what that means, right? Primetime Under.
Over the past five NFL seasons, primetime Unders have cashed at a rate of 60.1 percent. Just last year, Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night football games landed on the Under nearly 70 percent of the time. Coach Rick grabbed this one at 39.5. It's down to 38.5 at most sportsbooks already.
SOUTH ALABAMA @ APPALACHIAN STATE (APP -7, 62.5)
APPALACHIAN STATE -7
Expect some offense in this one tonight. South Alabama scored 87 points in its last game. It was against an FCS team, but the Jags have averaged 512 yards of total offense per game this season. Appalachian State averages over 430 yards per game and neither of these defenses is very good. South Alabama gave up 415 passing yards to North Texas in their season opener.
It comes down to this. The Mountaineers are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Appalachian State has won 10 of its last 11 homes and 5 of its last 6 Sun Belt Conference games. South Alabama is 1-4 in its last five on the road and 1-4 in its last five against the Mountaineers. South Alabama ranks 124th in Defensive Pass Success Rate. Appalachian State is going to tear up the Jaguars pass defense.
WASHINGTON @ CHICAGO CUBS (CHC -178, 8.5)
CUBS ML
Javier Assad starts for the Cubs against Washington's Patrick Corbin tonight. Corbin has been a fade candidate all season long, but he's had a recent stretch of success. Over his last 6 starts, Corbin has allowed 2 or fewer earned runs 5 times. He hasn't pitched against the Cubs this season, but his last start against them was in Chicago last year.
Corbin pitched okay in that game, giving up 3 earned runs in 5.1 innings. However, the Cubs would go on to win that game 17-3. Assad is 7-5 with a 3.27 ERA this season. He just beat Washington on Aug. 31 and he pitches much better at Wrigley Field. In home starts this season, Assad is 3-2 with a 2.24 ERA. More importantly, the Cubs need this win to stay alive in the National League wild card race.
