It's the slowest week of the year in sports, but the MLB All-Star Game will keep us busy tonight. The top players from the American League will face the top players from the National League in tonight's Mid-Summer Classic.
Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal will start for their respective teams on the mound. Skubal, the Triple Crown winner and current AL Cy Young winner, is having an incredible season. With 11.4 strikeouts and 1.2 walks per nine, he leads the major leagues. The 28-year-old has pitched 121 innings with an ERA of 2.23.
In just his second season as a professional, Skenes will start his second consecutive All-Star game. After making his debut last year, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick instantly became a star for the Pirates. He placed third in the Cy Young voting and was named NL Rookie of the Year. With a 2.01 ERA through 121 innings, he leads the majors in his sophomore campaign and hasn't let up.
Like the majority of All-Star starters, Skenes and Skubal will probably pitch one or two innings. The All-Star game aims to field as many players from both sides as possible, but only a few pitchers will get time on the mound.
