It’s the final game of this series tonight in Toronto. The Yankees pulled out a 5-4 win last night in Game 2 thanks to a Ben Rice home run in the top of the ninth inning. It was the Yankees eighth win in their last 12 games.

The Yankees are now three games behind the Blue Jays for the top spot in the AL East. In the American League playoff picture, New York holds the top wild card spot. New York only managed five hits against Toronto's pitching in Monday's opener, with no player recording more than one. The Yankees left seven runners on base and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Giancarlo Stanton hit his fifth home run of the season for the only Yankees run. Carlos Rodon (10-7) took the loss after he pitched five innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits, five walks, and four strikeouts.

Tonight, Max Fried starts for the Yankees. It’s his 21st start this season. In 122 innings pitched this season, he has a 2.43 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, 27 walks, and 113 strikeouts. He is 11-3. On July 12, Fried made his last start on the road against the Cubs and lost. He pitched three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.

Fried has a 1-1 record in his last three starts, pitching 14 innings with a 6.43 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, six walks, and nine strikeouts. This is Fried’s sixth start against the Blue Jays in his career. Toronto shot to the top of the AL East standings because of their recent hot play. Up until last night, the Blue Jays had won 11 consecutive home games at home and they are an incredible 36-16 at Rogers Centre this season.

Although Fried has had a strong first season in pinstripes, blister problems limited his previous start prior to the All-Star break. Prior to Tuesday, the Yankees had a road record of 25-26 and a season record of just 2-6 against Toronto, including a 0-5 record at Rogers Centre.
