BULLDOGS VS JAYHAWKS DAVID BOOTH MEMORIAL STADIUM – LAWERENCE, KC - 6:30PM EDT
Kansas coming into this season off a 5-7 season with a veteran group but injuries and situational hurdles along the way made it an underachieving season. This year they come into the 2025 campaign losing 38 seniors and bring back 10 starters. Thankfully, one of those starters is QB Jalon Daniels who has had quite a run in Lawrence. The OFF loses most of their key weapons in the passing & run game but fill those voids nicely with some experienced weapons in the transfer portal including an solid RB from Iowa and a WR crew full of stars at the G5 and FCS level. DEF should improve with the transfers they received at all levels. Last season, Kansas started the year 1-5 SU with their lone win coming against Lindenwood of the FCS but 4 of those losses were by a possession or less. They proceeded to go 4-2 SU the rest of the way including beating (3) ranked OPPs. This team with HC Lance Leopold is expected to improve overall.
For Fresno St, this feels like a reset year for them. They hire former USC LB coach Matt Entz to take over the Bulldogs. Matt Entz was the former HC of North Dakota State where he won (2) FCS titles in 6 years and had a 60-11 record there. This team will be dealing with some early growing pains as the offense will transition from a hurry up, no huddle pass RPO and zone running scheme to a more slow paced, power run focused scheme. Both sides of the ball for Fresno St will look different as they added EJ Warner at QB from Temple, an all new WR corp and an inexperienced Oline full of transfers. The RB corp is the positive for this team as they have some talent & depth. DEF brings back (4) starters from 2024 but loses their Top 3 tacklers. With the transitions on both sides of the ball roster-wise the coaching staff transition I suspect some growing pains for Fresno St early on.
The way I am looking at this is how Kansas finished the season vs Fresno St. Fresno St finished the year 1-4 SU & ATS where Kansas finished 4-2 SU & ATS playing tougher opponents including (3) upsets over ranked opponents. Plus you have to consider the familiarity with the players & coaches that Kansas has over a Fresno St team dealing with an entirely new coaching staff and offensive scheme. There is also a big motivational factor for Kansas here as this will be their 1st game in a new stadium and will want to give it a huge opening with a big win.
Fresno St is a 12.5 pt road dog here which is rare for them as they are only a double digit dog vs ranked OPPs but you find them here vs an unranked Kansas team as a heavy FAV. Kansas is 4-0 ATS in their season openers under Leipold and all were at home and all were as a double digit favorite.
