COACH RICK MLB PREVIEWS

RED SOX @ ANGELS 7/5/26

Tonight’s matchup at Angel Stadium features a fascinating contrast between a seasoned veteran pitcher and a complete newcomer. The Boston Red Sox send left-hander Ranger Suarez to the mound, while the Los Angeles Angels counter with Ryan Johnson, who is making his debut against this Boston lineup. Boston is coming off a dominant 8-1 victory yesterday, and the statistical trends suggest they are well-positioned to keep that momentum rolling in Anaheim.

The Red Sox hold a significant advantage on the mound with Suarez. Suarez has been a model of efficiency against the current Angels roster, maintaining a 21.4% strikeout rate and holding them to a collective .229 batting average over 42 plate appearances. He has specifically neutralized key threats like Jo Adell (0-for-3, 2 Ks) and Zach Neto.

Conversely, the Angels are starting Ryan Johnson, who has never faced Boston and struggled early this season. Before starts against Baltimore and Seattle last week, Johnson carried an ERA that was above 12.00.

Boston’s 8-1 win yesterday wasn't just a victory. It was a statement. Their lineup is healthy and disciplined, while the Angels are currently decimated by injuries. The Angels are missing Mike Trout (10-Day IL), Anthony Rendon (60-Day IL), and Yoán Moncada (60-Day IL), leaving their offense incredibly thin. With Suarez’s ability to induce soft contact and the Red Sox offense firing on all cylinders, the moneyline offers great value even as a road favorite.

TOP PLAYER PROP PREDICTIONS

Willson Contreras has been the engine of the Red Sox offense lately. Over his last 5 games, he has hit the Over 0.5 Hits 4 times, averaging 1.2 hits per game. His season-long consistency is equally impressive, hitting the over in 67.06% of his 85 games played. He is currently seeing the ball exceptionally well, evidenced by his 2.6 total bases average over the last 5 games.

Contreras has historically feasted on Angels pitching. In his last two games against them, he has hit the over 100% of the time, averaging 1.5 hits. While he hasn't faced Ryan Johnson yet, Contreras’s veteran approach and ability to hit both velocity and off-speed pitches make him a nightmare for a debuting pitcher. He is also performing well on the road, hitting the over in 61.9% of his 42 visitor games.

Anthony Seigler is currently on a tear for the Red Sox. He has hit the Over 0.5 hits in 9 of his last 10 games, averaging 1.3 hits per game in that span. Even more impressively, he has hit the Over in 4 of his last 5 games. For the season, he maintains a 73.33% hit rate over 15 games, showing that his recent surge is backed by solid fundamental play.

Seigler has already shown he can handle the Angels, hitting the Over in his only matchup against them this year. He is particularly effective on the road, hitting the Over in 71.43% of his 7 road games. Facing a rookie pitcher in Ryan Johnson, Seigler’s recent hot streak (1.0 mean hits over his last 5) suggests he will find a way to put the ball in play and extend his streak.

On the Angels' side, Josh Lowe has been the lone bright spot. He has hit the Over 0.5 Hits in 9 of his last 10 games and 4 of his last 5 games. While his season-long average is lower (46.3%), his recent form is undeniable, averaging 1.1 hits over his last 10 outings.

Lowe has a perfect 100% hit rate against the Red Sox in 2026 (2-for-2). While he is facing a tough lefty in Ranger Suarez, Lowe has historically held his own, recording a hit in his career matchups against him (.333 BvP BA). Given that he is playing at home, where he hits the Over 50% of the time, and his current scorching form, he is the most likely Angel to break through tonight.

GAME TOTAL PREDICTION

While Boston’s offense is potent, this game has the markings of a lower-scoring affair. Angel Stadium is a more pitcher-friendly park (93 Park Factor), and Ranger Suarez is an expert at suppressing runs, as evidenced by his career .229 BvP average against this roster. Furthermore, the Angels' offense is missing its primary power sources (Trout, Rendon), which significantly lowers the ceiling for their run production.

The Under 8.5 is available at a slight discount at some books. With Suarez likely to pitch deep into the game and the Angels struggling to string hits together, the burden of hitting the "Over" falls almost entirely on Boston. Even if Boston scores 5 or 6 runs, the Angels' depleted lineup makes it difficult to see them contributing enough to push this past 8.5.

FREE PICK: UNDER 8.5

Ranger Suarez has given up 2 ER or less in 10 of his 16 starts this season. In June, he had 5 starts and went 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA. He’s in great form and he’s had success against current Angels - 21.4% K rate and .229 batting average. Suarez is also very good against RHB and the Angels lineup is loaded with them. Ryan Johnson starts for the Angels and while his ERA was above 12.00 not too long ago, he has pitched 11 innings and allowed just 1 ER over his last two starts. Plus, Boston is awful (28th wRC+) against RHP. Boston has cashed an Under ticket in 5 of its last 7 road games. The Angels have seen the Under hit in 8 of their last 12 at home. Angel Stadium ranks 29th in Ballpark Factor, making it one of the more pitcher-friendly environments in MLB. The O/U record there this season is 19-25-1.
