BRAVES @ PIRATES 7/8/26
The Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates meet again at PNC Park tonight following a dominant 12-4 victory by the Pirates in the series opener. Pittsburgh's bats were on fire yesterday, and they look to keep that momentum rolling against a Braves team that is currently navigating a significant number of injuries to their pitching staff and core lineup.
Grant Holmes takes the hill for Atlanta, facing a Pirates lineup that just hung 12 runs on his teammates. Holmes has very limited experience against this specific Pittsburgh roster, having faced only five batters in his career. While he has held them to a .167 average in that tiny sample, he did allow a hit to Brandon Lowe. Holmes will need to be sharp at PNC Park, which is playing as a neutral environment today (100 Park Factor) but favors hits (102) over home runs (82).
The Pirates counter with Jared Jones. Jones has almost no history against this Braves lineup, with his only career matchup being against Mike Yastrzemski. In that encounter, Yastrzemski got the better of him, launching a home run. Jones will look to utilize the pitcher-friendly home run factor at PNC Park (82) to keep the Braves' power hitters in the yard. His ability to generate strikeouts will be key against an Atlanta team that is missing several high-contact bats.
NEWS & INJURY REPORT
Atlanta is dealing with a massive injury list. They are without superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., as well as Ha-Seong Kim and Sean Murphy. Their pitching depth is also tested with Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Joe Jiménez all on the 60-Day IL. This puts immense pressure on the remaining core of Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies.
Pittsburgh isn't fully healthy either. They are missing Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz, both on the 10-Day IL. However, their offense proved yesterday that they have the depth to overcome these absences, led by the recent hot streaks of Nick Gonzales and Ryan O'Hearn.
PNC Park is currently ranked 16th in overall park factor (100). While it is neutral for runs, it significantly suppresses home runs (82 factor). This suggests a game that will be decided by stringing hits together rather than the long ball, which may favor the Pirates' current high-contact approach.
TOP PLAYER PROP PREDICTIONS
Nick Gonzales is arguably the hottest hitter in this matchup. Over his last 5 games, he has a 100% hit rate, averaging a massive 2.2 hits per game. His success isn't just a flash in the pan. He has hit the Over 0.5 Hits in 80% of his last 15 games and 75% of his last 20. He also has a strong history against the Braves, recording a hit in 75% of their meetings in 2026.
Ryan O'Hearn has been a model of consistency for the Pirates' offense. He has cleared this 0.5 hits line in 80% of his last 5 games and 70% of his last 10. He is currently averaging 1.6 hits per game over his last five outings. While he has struggled in the past against Holmes (0-for-3), his current form and 63.89% hit rate at home this season make him a very reliable target tonight.
If the Braves are going to bounce back, it will be on the back of Matt Olson. Olson has a 100% hit rate over his last 5 games and has cleared 0.5 Hits in 74.44% of his 90 games this season. He has been particularly effective on the road, hitting the Over in 77.78% of his away games. He also has a 75% hit rate against the Pirates in 2026, making him the most dependable bat in the Atlanta lineup.
Esmerlyn Valdez offers excellent value at near even money. He has cleared this 1.5 HRR line in 80% of his last 5 and last 10 games, averaging 3.1 over his last ten. In his only matchup against the Braves this season, he recorded 3 H+R+RBI. Given his recent production and the hitter-friendly hit factor at PNC Park, he is a strong candidate to contribute across the box score again tonight.
MLB FREE PICKS GAME PREDICTION
The Pittsburgh Pirates are the play to take another game from the Braves tonight. Atlanta is simply too depleted by injuries right now, especially on the pitching side, to consistently shut down a Pirates offense that is firing on all cylinders. Gonzales and O'Hearn are in elite form, and while Olson remains a threat for the Braves, the lack of protection in the Braves' lineup allows Pirates pitchers to be more selective. Expect a competitive game, but the Pirates' offensive depth and home-field advantage should prevail.

FREE PICK: GRANT HOLMES OVER 1.5 WALKS
The only issue with our Holmes pick is the pricing. As of this writing, only daily fantasy type sites like Underdog and Fliff have this prop even listed at 1.5. If you can find this at somewhere around -200 or better, it’s worth the play. It cashes at a 75% (12 of 16) rate this season. Since the beginning of last season, Holmes has walked at least two batters in 29 of 37 starts. That’s a hit rate of over 78 percent. The Pirates walk quite a bit. They rank 6th in MLB in walks per game, averaging 3.79. Last night, the Buccos walked 7 times.
