RAMS @ CHARGERS 8/27/26
The Battle of Los Angeles wraps up the preseason at SoFi Stadium, and this is one of the most fascinating spots on the board. The Rams have been the most dominant team in the preseason — 2-0, outscoring opponents 54-12, with a +42 point differential that leads the NFL — yet they're catching points as underdogs. The Chargers are 1-1 after getting blown out 41-17 by the 49ers last week. The market has moved the spread from Chargers -2.5 at open out to -3.5, but the sharp model and the underlying structure tell a different story.
BEST ATS PLAY
Los Angeles Rams +3.5
The sharp model gives the Rams a 51.33% chance of covering, and the line movement from -2.5 at open out to -3.5 is a classic overreaction to the Chargers' announcement that their starters will play.
Why the Rams: This is the textbook definition of a "Pedigree Dog" spot. The Rams won 12 games last season, finished with the NFL's best offense (30.47 points per game, 1st in the league) and the fourth-ranked defense by DVOA, yet they enter this exhibition as a field-goal underdog to a team whose preseason dominance has been built on the back of backup quarterbacks. The theory behind this angle is simple: teams that won 11+ games the previous season possess deep rosters, winning cultures, and situational stability, making them undervalued when they enter exhibition games as underdogs. The market routinely fails to account for the depth and preparedness of these specific rosters.
The Rams have been the best team in the preseason, period. They're 2-0 with a +42 point differential — the highest in the NFL — and they've done it without a single starter seeing the field. They beat the Chiefs 20-12 and then shut out the Saints 34-0, allowing just 12 total points across two games. Their defense hasn't allowed a single touchdown all preseason. That's not a fluke — that's a deep roster with real talent at every level, and Sean McVay has a 17-11-1 ATS record in the preseason for a reason.
The quarterback situation heavily favors the Rams. Rookie first-round pick Ty Simpson has been exceptional — 29-of-37 for 263 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions across two games. He had a 21-of-25, 190-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Chiefs in Week 1, and he's expected to get the start and go most of the way tonight. Stetson Bennett has been solid too — 23-of-37 for 219 yards with two rushing touchdowns — and McVay has hinted Bennett may not even play, which means Simpson could handle the vast majority of the snaps. On the other side, Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei have been less than stellar — neither has logged multiple touchdowns, and both were held to under 100 passing yards in the Chargers' Week 2 loss to the 49ers.
The Chargers' "starters playing" narrative is overblown. Jim Harbaugh said his starters will see roughly six to nine plays — that's one or two series, not enough to change the outcome of the game. Justin Herbert and the starting offense will get a brief dress rehearsal, but then it's back to the backups. And those backups have been mediocre: the Chargers have been outscored through two preseason games, including that 41-17 beatdown at the hands of the 49ers. The Chargers' defense has allowed 48 points in two games, and their rushing attack ranks 23rd in the preseason with just 172 yards.
The head-to-head history adds context. The Rams are 0-1 straight up in the last meeting with the Chargers, losing 31-10, and the Under hit in that game. But that's regular-season history — this is a preseason game where both teams are evaluating the bottom of their rosters. The Rams' established winning culture under McVay should make for a smooth transition, and their depth is built to compete in exactly this kind of game.
GAME TOTAL ANALYSIS
Final preseason week games are typically the least polished of the three. Rosters are closest to their eventual 53-man cuts, most teams have already gotten what they need from their true starters, and the combination of roster-bubble players getting the bulk of the snaps with cutdowns just days away tends to produce more stalled drives than clean scoring. This is a structural reality of Week 3 preseason football, and the market has adjusted accordingly — the total has dropped from 39.5 at open to 38.5 at several books.
The Rams' defense has been good in the preseason. They've allowed just 12 total points in two games — 6 points per game, the best mark in the preseason — and they haven't surrendered a single touchdown. Their second- and third-team defenses have been very good, and even with some key players on injured reserve (Zech McPhearson, Keir Thomas II, Eddie Walls III, Daniel Rickert), the unit has shown remarkable cohesion. Against a Chargers offense that has struggled to run the ball (23rd in rushing yards) and has been inconsistent through the air, the scoring ceiling is limited.
The quarterback situation could be interesting. The Rams are turning the offense over to Ty Simpson and potentially Stetson Bennett, both of whom have been efficient but not explosive. The key is that those two are competing for the backup role behind Matthew Stafford, which could lead to more points on the board.
The Chargers counter with Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei — both have shown flashes, but neither has been consistently productive. Lance has completed 22-of-36 passes for 237 yards this preseason, while Uiagalelei has gone 13-for-24 for 200 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. But against a Rams defense that has been the best in the preseason, the scoring ceiling is limited.
The Chargers' offensive approach is conservative. Justin Herbert will play six to nine plays, then it's the backup unit. The Chargers' regular-season offense was solid — 21.65 points per game, 20th in the league — but that's with Herbert under center. The backup unit is a different animal, and against a Rams defense that has allowed just 12 points in two games, the scoring ceiling is limited.
FINAL NOTES
The common thread tonight is that the market has overreacted to the Chargers' announcement that their starters will play. The Rams have been the best team in the preseason — 2-0 with a +42 point differential, the highest in the NFL — and they've done it without a single starter seeing the field. The Chargers, meanwhile, have been outscored through two preseason games, including a 41-17 beatdown at the hands of the 49ers.
The Rams +3.5 is the anchor play, with the Under as the sharpest totals play. The line movement from -2.5 at open out to -3.5 is a classic overreaction to the starters narrative, and the sharp model gives the Rams a 51.33% chance of covering.
