Both the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to move up the National League standings when they play each other tonight. The Diamondbacks are 41-42 after dropping three straight to Miami over the weekend. The DBacks have dropped into fourth place in the National League West Division after four straight losses, while the Giants are 45-39 and in third place.

With their starting pitching leading the way, the Giants are having a successful season. With just 34 runs allowed in 107.1 innings pitched and 120 strikeouts, Logan Webb is one of those starting pitchers who has looked fantastic on the mound. Additionally, opponents are making poor contact and finding it difficult to score runs against Webb this season, as evidenced by his .358 expected opponent slugging percentage, 5.6 barrel rate, and 3.03 expected ERA.

Although Webb has been excellent, the lineup has performed poorly, averaging just 4.18 runs per contest. Ramos Heliot’s slash line is .280/.358/.463 with 13 home runs and 144 total bases. Matt Chapman is close behind with 12 home runs and 104 total bases. His slash line is .243/.360/.452, but the rest of the lineup has not performed well. Opposing pitchers can eliminate the top-heavy lineup because only five active batters have an OPS+ over 100.

Due to their starting pitchers' poor performance, the Diamondbacks are having a difficult season. One of those pitchers, Ryne Nelson, is hoping to improve on a season in which he has pitched 60.2 innings and given up 26 runs. Additionally, opponents are hitting Nelson and making solid plate appearances to easily drive in runs, as evidenced by his .258 expected opponent batting average, 23.9 chase rate, and 4.10 expected ERA.

Despite Nelson's struggles, the lineup has performed well, averaging 5.22 runs per game. It's Ketel Marte who's hitting .306/.407/.592 with 122 total bases and 16 home runs. Corbin Carroll has a slash line of .255/.341/.573 with 164 total bases and 20 home runs. Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor each have 18 home runs and 235 total bases. Eugenio Suarez is slashing .253/.323/.565 with 25 home runs.

Webb can be a dominant pitcher, but he has struggled on the road this year. He’s 3-4 with a 3.75 ERA in 8 road starts this season. Arizona won the first series of the season against the Giants in San Francisco. Webb did not pitch in that series. Seven of the last ten meetings have gone Over the game total.

He’s only had one bad start (6.1 IP, 4 ER) at Arizona in his career and that was back in 2022. In five road starts at Arizona, Webb has a 2.67 ERA. This season, he’s 7-5 with a 2.52 ERA and he’s fifth in MLB in strikeouts (120). Ryne Nelson has been solid in his last three starts, allowing just two earned runs. He has six career starts against the Giants and is 2-0 with 3.11 ERA. The Under has cashed in 8 of the last 12 games for San Francisco and with both teams struggling and tired, the Under is the play.
