METS @ ORIOLES 7/9/25
Mets OF Juan Soto may be attempting to make a statement this week after being passed over for selection in the MLB All-Star Game next week.
When the Mets play the host Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a three-game series tonight, he will have another opportunity to showcase his skills. After a 7-6, 10-inning comeback victory in the series opener on Tuesday, the Mets have now won five of their last six games. The game-winning single in the tenth was one of Soto's three hits. It was another Mets outing with late-game production.
For the second time this season, the Orioles were attempting to reach a four-game winning streak. That made losing a four-run lead late in the game even more frustrating. Baltimore manager Tony Mansolino felt the Orioles played well. It just wasn’t their night. It served as yet another illustration of the Orioles' incapacity to maintain their momentum this season.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned other players who might be worthy of the mid-summer showcase because the Mets have been receiving a lot of contributions. OF Brandon Nimmo, for example, has one more RBI (53) than Soto.
In the meantime, infielder Jackson Holliday hit another home run Tuesday night and is providing the Orioles with what they like.
The Mets will start left-hander David Peterson (6-4, 3.18 ERA). He had lost three straight starts before beating Milwaukee 3-2 last week. In 6.2 innings, he held Milwaukee to two runs (one earned). This will be Peterson's fifth road start in a run of seven games. The Mets have an 0–7 record when Peterson starts on the road. The Mets won his season debut at Miami and have lost seven straight on the road since. Peterson has a 3.24 ERA over 16.2 innings and is 1-1 in his four career meetings with the Orioles.
Following a week-long layoff, Baltimore will turn to right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (6-5, 4.44 ERA). In last Wednesday's 6-0 loss at Texas, he was hit for six runs and a season-high 10 hits. Over his last four starts, Sugano has given up at least one home run and seven long balls in total.

COACH RICK FREE PICK:
DAVID PETERSON OVER 17.5 OUTS
Peterson has shown a strong tendency to go deep into games. He has hit the Over when his Outs line is 17.5 in 60% of his last five starts. He averaged 18.8 outs over those five games. He’s gone Over this prop in 7 of his last ten starts (averaging 19.1 outs). Historically, he's performed well against the Orioles, hitting the over in his 2024 matchup against them, where he pitched a full 7 innings, recording 21 outs. When playing on the road this season, he's cleared this line in 75% of his starts, averaging 17.5 outs.
