The Minnesota Timberwolves are literally fighting to avoid being eliminated from the Western Conference play-in. In a game that nearly turned into a brawl in the second quarter, Minnesota (43-32) defeated the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. They will now take that mentality to Denver to play the Nuggets tonight.
With seven games left in the regular season, the Timberwolves, who have won two in a row, are half a game behind Golden State for the sixth seed in the West. As Minnesota demonstrated on Sunday night, the competition for seeds has helped create a postseason atmosphere at the conclusion of the regular season.
When Minnesota objected to a foul on Naz Reid, the Timberwolves and Detroit got heated. Along with Reid and Donte DiVincenzo, assistant coach Pablo Prigioni all were ejected from the game. Head coach Chris Finch hopes his team can maintain that advantage against Denver in the season's last game between the two teams. Minnesota has defeated the Nuggets five times in a row, including in the playoffs last year, and has won the first three games of this season.
The Timberwolves narrowly defeated Denver at home in November, but they have defeated them by 29 and 20 points in their last two meetings. In the three games against the Nuggets, Anthony Edwards, who leads Minnesota at 27.2 points per game, has averaged 30.7 points.
Reid is scoring 14.4 points per game this season, and Julius Randle, who is second on the Timberwolves at 18.8 points, scored 25 in the victory at Denver on March 12.
There is not much room for error as the Nuggets (47-28) lead the Lakers by a narrow margin for the third seed. In addition to aiming for the top seed, they are motivated to stop a five-game losing streak against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs the previous year.
After losing the opening game of the five-game homestand that concludes Wednesday night, Denver has now won two straight games. Despite missing Friday night's decisive victory over Utah, Jamal Murray, who is second on the team in scoring at 21.6 points per game, worked out on Monday.
Nikola Jokic leads the Nuggets in assists (10.2), rebounds (12.8), and points (29.3). He is among the NBA's top three in each category. Michael Porter Jr. is third on the Nuggets in scoring at 18.2 points a game.
